Coming out in Cambodia: Women in same-sex relationships stand ...

She has been charged with human trafficking and illegal detention despite insisting that their relationship was consensual.

The case is surrounded by controversy and police are suspected of fabricating charges that the defendants' girlfriend was underage. Srey Rann's litigator told the Phnom Penh Post that her "girlfriend's family bribed local authorities to change her real age" in order to take legal action against Srey Rann.

A 2010 report from the Cambodian Centre for Human Rights highlights that although same-sex relationships are legal there are many examples of lesbians being persecuted by the law. The report suggests that those in authority who discriminate and persecute LGBT [lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender] individuals may "conceive of such treatment as 'punishment' for not adhering to accepted social norms."

Srun Srorn, a key player in the struggle for LGBT rights in Cambodia, has met lesbians from all over The Kingdom with similar experiences of heartache, discrimination and forced marriages.

He explains: "There are some [lesbian] couples that have died because their parents, family and local authorities have got involved with their cases. In Banteay Meanchay, one lesbian's family forced her to marry a man and gave her some traditional medicine which resulted in her dying. When she died, her partner killed herself too."

Cambodia prides itself as the Kingdom of Wonder, but overwhelming problems with poverty, low levels of education and poor health provision dominate the news and agenda for development agencies. In this context, issues of sexuality and gender identity can be overlooked or seen as a low priority.
Srorn argues that the first problem lesbians in Cambodia face, is being female in a society that favours men and boys: "Women are discriminated against and stigmatised every day by cultural norms."

Traditionally, a Cambodian woman's main role is to marry well and raise children. School lessons often reflect this and are geared towards preparing girls for these roles. As a result, many girls believe that this preparation is more important than academic aspirations. The Chbap Srey or Women's Code of Conduct, which until recently was taught to all school children, outlines the importance for women to be feminine, modest and obedient thus limiting decision making power, political power and women's social and professional capacity to express themselves and build relationships.

Although female employment is relatively high, women are more commonly employed informally by family members on a low wage. As a consequence, women are rarely financially independent and are typically dependant on their parents or their husbands. This factor is particularly significant for Cambodian lesbians as they are often financially incapable of living on their own or with their female partners.

Many Cambodian lesbians identify as neither fully male nor fully female but as third gender. A large number of women in same-sex relationships choose to express themselves using male pronouns and dressing in masculine clothes, thus transgressing gender norms. Women that express themselves in such a way find that they can be excluded from school, have limited employment options and may be excluded from their communities. As a result, many Cambodian lesbians find they are discriminated against firstly as women, and secondly as lesbians.

Ly Pisey supports women in marginalised communities including sex workers, trans women and lesbians. Pisey explains that women in same-sex relationships are often isolated in their communities and that "homosexuality has not yet been understood widely by families, communities, work places, charity workers, government officers and society as an alright way of living. Many people cannot accept it..."

In 2008, Pisey and Srorn joined forces with national and international LGBT volunteers with a shared desire to improve the situation for LGBT Cambodians. They enlisted the support of several non-governmental organisations and local businesses and together they created an extraordinary and pivotal moment in Cambodian LGBT history: The first Pride week.

Organised in 2009 to coincide with International Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, for many Cambodian lesbians it was the first opportunity to celebrate their identity and meet like-minded individuals and couples from provinces all over Cambodia as well as other countries. Since this event, the organisers have continued their work and formed Rainbow Community Kampuchea (RoCK), an LGBT rights advocacy collective.

Pride 2011 featured a Buddhist blessing ceremony. In a country which places so much importance on Buddhist teachings this ceremony was a great accomplishment in the realisation of LGBT acceptance.

This year, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Intersex and Queer Peoples Caucus convened in Phnom Penh. The convention celebrated diversity and reminded governments and members of civil society that LGBTIQ rights must be recognised, promoted and protected. This is an indicator of how successfully RoCK has not only built strong grassroots foundations but also linked in with regional and international communities.

With so many socio-economic problems present in Cambodia, some may say that focussing on the rights of lesbian identities and women in same-sex relationships is of low importance. In fact, one could argue that the empowerment of a group that faces double discrimination due to their gender and their sexual orientation could be ground-breaking by challenging societal structures that favour both heterosexuality and patriarchy.

In many cultures, women are discouraged from seeking or expressing sexual pleasure and their sexuality remains hidden. As such, in western and developing countries, female sexuality is often suppressed. These factors may be hindering development efforts.

Last year's report from the Institute of Development studies and Pathways of Women's Empowerment found that "focusing on the positive aspects of female sexuality is a key strategy in challenging limiting social norms that restrict women's wellbeing and opportunities at work, in politics and in the public domain."

Srorn and the RoCK team continue challenging deep-seated cultural beliefs that lead to discrimination: "Sometimes gays and lesbians are seen as almost sub-human by many people in our society. We want to tell those people that we are human beings- and we love who we are."

Porn actor in German court over grisly killing

Montreal Police via EPA

A handout image released on Tuesday by the Montreal Police shows Luka Rocco Magnotta after his arrest in Berlin, Germany on Monday. Magnotta was arrested in connection with a murder in Montreal, Quebec, Canada which involved the discovery of part of a body in Montreal but other parts of the body mailed to political party offices in Ottawa, Canada.

By Andy Eckardt, NBC News producer in Germany

Updated at 7:50 p.m. ET: BERLIN - Luka Magnotta, the stripper and porn actor accused of killing and dismembering a man in Canada, was served with an international arrest warrant by a judge in Germany on Tuesday after a global manhunt led to his arrest in Berlin.

Meanwhile, separate packages containing a human hand and foot were mailed to two schools in Vancouver, B.C., Vancouver Police Deputy Chief Warren Lemcke said at a news conference on Tuesday. Lemcke could not say whether the packages were connected to those believed to have been sent by Magnotta to the headquarters of the federal Liberal and Conservative parties.

The Toronto Star reported that one of Lin?s hands, a foot and his head remain missing.

Earlier Tuesday, Canadian police said video footage from the killing seems to show the suspect eating the body.

The fugitive was confronted by seven German police officers in an Internet caf? where he had been spotted reading news coverage about himself.

Interpol began a hunt on Thursday for Magnotta, who faces first-degree murder charges over the grisly videotaped death of Jun Lin, a 32-year-old Chinese student whose body parts were mailed to the political parties in Ottawa.?

Police told NBC News the 29-year-old was apprehended early afternoon on Monday in the city?s Neu-Koelln district after officers on patrol were flagged down by an employee of the caf?, Kadir Anlayisli.

He told a?Turkish newspaper, cited by the Toronto Star: ?He was wearing sunglasses for a while, but I was sure that he was the wanted man."

After an international manhunt, authorities apprehended Canadian porn actor Luka Magnotta, who is alleged to have murdered, dismembered, and cannibalized a man thought to be his boyfriend. NBC's Jim Maceda reports.

Police said Magnotta was being held at "police custody facility" at Tempelhofer Damm in central Berlin.

He was brought before judge behind closed doors at a?district court in Berlin on Tuesday, where he was presented with the arrest warrant, officials told NBC News. Officials said Magnotta will not fight extradition.

Canada, like Europe, has no death penalty, making extradition more likely.

Quebec bureau of prosecutions spokesman Rene Verret told The Associated Press Magnotta could be returned to Canada with two weeks unless he contested extradition moves.

Surveillance footage shows three police officers accompany the handcuffed Magnotta a couple of minutes after police entered the cafe.

Gore website
Montreal police say?Magnotta filmed the Chinese student's murder and posted it on a website specializing in gore. The video shows a man with an ice pick stabbing another naked, bound male. He also dismembers the corpse and performs sexual acts with it in what police called a horrifying video.

The warning signs apparently were already there. For nearly two years animal activists had been looking for a man who tortured and killed cats and posted videos of his cruelty online. Since Jun Lin's murder, Montreal police have released a photo from the video which they say is of Magnotta.

Magnotta was accused of sexually assaulting a woman in 2005, but the charges were dropped, the lawyer who represented him at the time said.

In a crime scene Montreal police say is the worst they have seen, his Montreal apartment included a bloody mattress and pools of blood on the floor and in the refrigerator. The police said a janitor found a torso with no head or limbs in a suitcase in an alley behind the building.

Toronto lawyer Peter Scully said he represented Magnotta in a fraud case in 2004 and a sexual assault case in 2005.

"I've had lots of creepy characters and Eric did not stand out as one of them," he said. Scully refers to his client by his previous name, Eric Newman.

But Nina Arsenault, a Toronto transsexual who said she had a relationship with Magnotta over a decade ago, described him as a drug user with a temper, who sometimes turned his anger on himself, hitting himself on the head, and other parts of his body.

While Magnotta described himself in an online video interview with a site called "Naked News" as a stripper and male escort, Lin was registered as an undergraduate in the engineering department and computer science at Concordia University in Montreal.

Video:?'Cannibal killer' is target of manhunt
Authorities believe that a decomposing foot mailed to the headquarters of the governing Conservative Party in Ottawa on Tuesday and a hand found inside a package at a postal depot are parts of the same person.?

Meantime, Interpol hailed the arrest Monday as a showcasing of the value of?international police cooperation.

At the request of Canadian authorities, Interpol issued a so-called Red Notice for Magnotta on Thursday, and he was detained four days later in Berlin.

Shape-shifting shell

Monday, June 4, 2012

Scientists at the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL) in Heidelberg, Germany, have for the first time uncovered the detailed structure of the shell that surrounds the genetic material of retroviruses, such as HIV, at a crucial and potentially vulnerable stage in their life cycle: when they are still being formed. The study, published online today in Nature, provides information on a part of the virus that may be a potential future drug target.

Retroviruses essentially consist of genetic material encased in a protein shell, which is in turn surrounded by a membrane. After entering a target cell ? in the case of HIV, one of the cells in our immune system ? the virus replicates, producing more copies of itself, each of which has to be assembled from a medley of viral and cellular components into an immature virus. "All the necessary components are brought together within the host cell to form the immature virus, which then has to mature into a particle that's able to infect other cells" says John Briggs, who led the research at EMBL. "We found that when it does, the changes to the virus' shell are more dramatic than expected."

Both the mature and immature virus shells are honeycomb-like lattices of hexagon-shaped units. Using a combination of electron microscopy and computer-based methods, Briggs and colleagues investigated which parts of the key proteins stick together to build the honeycomb of the immature shell. These turned out to be very different from the parts that build the mature shell. This knowledge will help scientists to unravel how the immature virus is assembled in the cell and how the shell proteins rearrange themselves to go from one form to the other.

Findings such as these may one day prove valuable to those wanting to design new types of anti-retroviral therapies. Many anti-retroviral drugs already block the enzyme that would normally separate components of the immature shell to allow it to mature. But there are currently no approved drugs that act on that shell itself and prevent the enzyme from locking on.

Although the virus shells imaged in this study were derived from the Mason-Pfizer monkey virus and made artificially in the laboratory, they closely resemble those of both this virus and HIV ? which are very similar ? in their natural forms.

"We still need a lot more detailed information before drug design can really be contemplated," Briggs concludes, "but finally being able to compare mature and immature structures is a step forwards."

Are Americans ready for a Mormon president?

Mitt Romney's faith emerged as little more than a subordinate issue on the US campaign trail, but with the Republican nomination securely in his grip, are American voters now ready for a Mormon president?

The candidate made history late Tuesday as the first from his religion to win the nomination of a major political party, and the achievement helps show how far the acceptance of Mormonism has come since its founding in the United States nearly two centuries ago.

A President Romney could be a golden opportunity for a church aiming to broaden its base across the United States and internationally, but it is also fraught with risk.

Romney, who outlasted several rivals in a bruising primary battle, has become the unlikely flagbearer of a Republican movement heavily influenced by evangelical Christians, some of whom have called Mormonism a "cult."

But despite persistent skepticism about the faith -- a Bloomberg News poll from March shows more than one in three Americans hold an unfavorable view of the Mormon church -- associate professor Brandon Rottinghaus of the University of Houston said Wednesday he thinks Americans are ready for a Mormon president.

"There will be a small segment of evangelical voters who won't accept the Mormon faith as a tenet of Christianity, but most voters will be tolerant," Rottinghaus told AFP.

"The big challenge for the Romney campaign was to get through the Republican primary process without a religious uproar, a task they have completed."

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has remained silent on the presidential campaign, even though Romney's milestone could be seen as a plus for Mormonism.

"The church's political neutrality is well established, and we have no interest in providing commentary on a political race," said Eric Hawkins, a spokesman for the Utah-based church.

The breakthrough is tempered by the historic nature of the 2008 race, which achieved several firsts: Americans elected Democrat Barack Obama as their first black president, Sarah Palin became the first female Republican vice presidential pick, and Hillary Clinton almost earned her party's nomination.

And in 2000, Democrat Al Gore very nearly won the White House with Joe Lieberman, an orthodox Jew, as his running mate.

"Primary audiences in both parties are used to seeing diversity among the pool of potential nominees," Rottinghaus said.

Romney is not the first Mormon to seek the White House. Founder Joseph Smith ran in 1844, in part to press for greater civil liberties for members of his nascent church.

And Jon Huntsman, a former Utah governor, was a candidate this year, but his campaign failed to gain traction and he dropped out in January.

With the general election now in full swing, Obama and Romney are hammering each other over economic policy. But character and personal background form a piece of the puzzle, and Romney's faith will likely come under some scrutiny.

For many Mormons, like Aaron Sherinian, a public relations professional in Washington, Romney's nomination marks "a chance to talk about who we are, what we believe."

But "religion isn't the issue on the ballot," Sherinian told AFP.

"This election is going to be more about what's happening to people's pocketbooks than what's being said over pulpits."

Romney has spoken little about his religion, other than portraying himself as a man of faith with beliefs similar to those of other Christians.

In 2007 during his first presidential run, Romney gave an address about the role of faith in America, but he mentioned Mormonism just once.

Earlier this month in an appeal to evangelicals, he gave the commencement speech at Liberty University, America's largest Christian college, and spoke of how "people of different faiths, like yours and mine" can find ways where "we can meet in common purpose."

Some of the stigma faced by Mormons stems from the faith's seemingly secret traditions -- non-Mormons are barred from entering temples, for example.

The church is known for its missionaries, as well as its past practice of polygamy and strict rules against alcohol, tobacco and caffeine.

There are six million Mormons in the United States, and three out of four describe themselves as conservative.

Earlier this month televangelist Pat Robertson, who himself ran for president in 1988 and is aligned with the Christian Right, said Romney's faith was no longer an issue.

"It looks like the people who were worried about his Mormonism, at least that crowd is diminishing somewhat," Robertson said on his show, The 700 Club.

"The question is, if you have two candidates, you don't have Jesus running against someone else. You have Obama running against Romney."
