Supersizing the sandwich generation | Inheritance | Retirement ...

About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

Balancing the demands of family life for today?s parents can be difficult at the best of times. Times are even tougher for many a parent suddenly tasked with the responsibility of caring for their own parents as well. These people make up the sandwich generation ? those raising their children and simultaneously looking after their parents.

But today?s changing demographics ? many of them highlighted in census data released recently by Statistics Canada ? are resulting in a sort of super-sizing of the sandwich generation.

There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home

The increase in rates of senior or ?grey? divorce means higher odds of caring for divorced parents and maybe even their new partners. As if caring for your married parents isn?t tough enough, we might see a generation of Baby Boomers providing elder care for parents in multiple locations.

About one-quarter of the so-called sandwich generation already has a second slice on top since they care for two or more seniors.

The trend towards having children at a later age also puts more people in the position of having to care for both children and parents. And since people are simply having fewer children period, there are less children to care for the growing ranks of the elderly.

The term ?sandwich generation? was coined by American social worker Dorothy Miller in 1981. A generation later, more than one-quarter of today?s Canadians aged 45-64 have children living with them and also perform some sort of elder care.

Since eight out of 10 in the sandwich generation are also working, it?s not surprising to see more and more retirement homes and nursing care options becoming available to provide the care they may not have the time to provide themselves. In some cases, it?s just not an option for the elderly to live on their own. That said, not all seniors have the resources to afford these facilities ? nor do all of their children.

Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money

Statistics Canada reports the number of seniors living with relatives or non-relatives in a private dwelling increased from 285,370 to 393,150 from 2001 to 2011.

There are incentives to consider the option of moving Mom and Dad into your home or moving your family into their home. Selling your parents? home or your home could provide funds to use towards their care. It could also reduce the commuting costs of going back and forth from your home to theirs, since they are not likely to live close by.

And given that Statistics Canada reports that 15% of sandwiched workers have to reduce their work hours, having your parents in your home could mean more time to get the job done ? both your day job and your night job. After all, there are only so many hours in the day.

Beyond the stress of physically caring for parents comes the stress of caring for their money. And practically speaking, there are typically two different problems when it comes to Mom and Dad?s money ? they either have too little or too much.

Too little means they might become a financial burden on you. And if you have siblings, deciding how to split the cost of care can be a delicate subject. Should the cost be split equally? Should the oldest child step to the plate? Should the wealthiest child bear more of the burden? Or the one who makes more money? Or the one who got more financial support from their parents over the years?

Having too much money, while seemingly less of a problem, isn?t always so. One child may want to keep the funds intact in their parents? names, while others might push for an early advance of their inheritance. Beyond that, it?s common to see situations where strategies to move money from one generation to the next or to reduce taxes or probate defeat the original intention or lead to significant costs ? both financially and on family ties ? ranging from mistakes to disagreements to litigation.

The good news on the tax front is that the Canada Revenue Agency provides incentives to Canadians who are caring for elders. It?s possible a senior (or anyone, for that matter) may qualify for a tax credit called the ?disability amount? if they suffer from prolonged symptoms that inhibit their performance of the activities of daily living. Nursing home and caregiver costs may be claimed as medical expenses for another tax credit. And beyond that, there are additional tax credits for ?infirm dependents? as well as ?caregivers? depending on whether or not a senior lives with you or depends on you financially for support.

Having three generations under one roof is more common elsewhere in the world, but perhaps less so here in North America ? right now. One problem with this option is that it could raise an interesting dilemma ? that is, what if you take in your divorced parent and subsequently need to provide care to your other parent? Or maybe your parent has remarried and they require help as a couple? What if your parent passes away and their spouse still requires assistance? Maybe you inherit the house that the spouse is living in?

Odds are moving more in favour of being presented with such situation and Baby Boomers have some decisions to make in the not-so-distant future to ensure they can digest the double-decker sandwich they could soon be served.

Kansas Church Will Have to Pay Taxes on State Senate Candidate?s Home

Remember Wichita City Council member and state Senate candidate Michael O?Donnell?

Michael O?Donnell

He?s the guy who said he was living in and paying rent for a house owned by a church (where his father preaches). But the church, as a tax-exempt institution, wasn?t paying taxes on that property? something you?re only allowed to do if a pastor?s living on the property.

That?s a serious problem. And the FFRF alerted the Sedgwick County Appraiser?s Office as soon as they found out.

Now, there?s been a happy resolution to the issue:

The home of Wichita City Council member and state Senate candidate Michael O?Donnell is going back on the tax rolls and his father?s church will get a bill for back taxes through 2010, the Sedgwick County Appraiser?s Office has ruled.

The Rev. Michael O?Donnell, pastor of Grace and father of the council member, said the church will refile a tax exemption request to the Kansas State Board of Tax Appeals, essentially appealing the appraiser?s ruling.

?

?We apologize that this situation has brought undo negative publicity to Councilman O?Donnell as he has more than met the requirements for his living in the home,? his father said. ?We look forward to appearing before the Kansas State Board of Tax appeals and presenting our situation.?

His son said the issue shouldn?t negatively affect the Kansas Senate bid.

?It started out as a political agenda from the Wisconsin atheists,? council member O?Donnell said. ?Nothing has changed with this issue being between the church and the county.?

[FFRF attorney Patrick] Elliott chuckled at the accusation.

?We?re an apolitical group, a nonprofit that does not get involved in elections or campaigns,? he said, ?but we are concerned about state-church issues, including churches abusing tax privileges, which was the case here.?

You would?ve thought the Christian pastor would have been quicker to remedy the situation instead of placing blame on others. It?s almost as if religion doesn?t make you an honest person? huh. Shocking.

Good thing the atheist group was ready to do the right thing when the Christians were trying to hide from the law.

Accused murder for hire teacher described as 'hostile'

A Florida high school teacher who is accused of masterminding a murder for hire plot against another teacher has a history of disciplinary problems.

In a letter dated November 2001 and obtained by ABC News affiliate WFTS-TV, James Pepe, 55, was chastised for an apparent outburst.

"Your unprofessional conduct? caused a disruption of a school function and created an uncomfortable and hostile situation?" said a letter from the Professional Standards Director at Tampa Bay Technical High School, where Pepe worked at the time.

"Several professionals described your demeanor in terms such as 'hostile,' 'aggressive,' 'extremely volatile,' and your anger as 'alarming,'" the letter stated.

Despite the letter, the station noted that Pepe's evaluations were nearly perfect.

Pepe, a social studies teacher at Bloomingdale High School in Hillsborough County who liked students to call him "Doctor Professor Pepe," was arrested at school on Thursday.

In a Sept. 13 phone call, Pepe, allegedly told an undercover officer that he was willing to pay $2,000 for "an issue that he might need taken care of," according to WFTS-TV.

He is accused of trying to put out a hit on Robert Meredith, a former co-worker. The two men had apparently worked together at Strawberry Crest High School.

Both schools are in the Hillsborough County public school district.

Authorities began investigating Pepe in August after the man he allegedly contacted to kill Meredith became concerned that he was serious and called authorities.

"It had moved beyond just a fixation to an actual anger," a spokesperson for the Plant City Police Department told ABC News.

Police called the FBI which then, according to authorities, taped a series of phone calls between Pepe and an undercover agent.

In the recording made just two weeks ago, in which Pepe allegedly told the undercover officer he would be willing to pay him $2,000, Pepe balked at the officer's request for an in-person meeting.

Meredith told WFTS-TV he knew of Pepe, but did not socialize with him and has no idea why he would be targeted.

"When you are at school you have limited time to talk to co-workers, period. So, as far as going out and having a drink, never," Meredith said. "This came as a complete shock."

Pepe reportedly told police he and Meredith were best friends and had a falling out. He also claimed Meredith was spreading rumors that he was a child molester.

Meredith, who is still a teacher, said he never had any harsh words or a confrontation with Pepe.

"I don't feel that I'm in any way culpable for this," he said. "If there is a problem, it is 100 percent on the other side."

Pepe is being held at Hillsborough County jail on one charge of solicitation to commit murder. He was not offered bail.

PowerSkin Battery Case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 review

If you updated to iOS 6 on your iPhone 4S or iPhone 4 and despite all our battery life tips, still aren't getting enough power to get you through the day, or if you simply travel and need to recharge on the go, the PowerSkin Battery Case for iPhone is worth a look. Like other battery cases, the PowerSkin fits snugly over your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S -- sorry, no iPhone 5 version available yet! -- and hooks into the Dock connector to supply power.

PowerSkin Battery Case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 review

Unlike some competing cases, the PowerSkin isn't made out of hard plastic. It's soft and silicone, which means instead of you having to take it apart to put it on your iPhone, it's a single piece and you just slip your iPhone inside. The materials used for the PowerSkin also have some other advantages. First, they're light. The PowerSkin is lighter than a lot of other battery cases I've tried (though admittedly not sleeker). Second, the materials provide for a soft-touch finish, making it less likely you'll drop it to begin with. Third and most importantly, they're shock absorbing. So, it helps prevent you from dropping your iPhone, and when it can't prevent it, it helps your iPhone survive it. Double bonus. If you're going to have to deal with the extra bulk of a battery case, you might as well enjoy the benefits of some extra impact protection as well.

The PowerSkin Battery Case for iPhone 4S and iPhone 4 charges over USB and it'll charge your iPhone before topping itself up, meaning you'll have a fully charged iPhone and a fully charged PowerSkin at the end of the cycle. You can even sync with iTunes over the cable, if you haven't gone PC Free yet.

The battery inside the PowerSkin is 1500mAh which is roughly analogous to the one inside the iPhone, so you should get double the battery life overall. The PowerSkin has a battery level indicator that consists of 4 lights and shows you the remaining charge level -- 100%, 75%, 50%, 25%, or nothing. PowerSkin rates it as providing 5 extra hours of talk time and 200 extra hours of standby time.

The design is nice and the Matte Titanium PowerSkin model I was sent to review reminded me of the look of the original iPhone -- a metal back with a black swatch, albeit across the top instead of the bottom. My only nitpick is that the inside bottom of the PowerSkin doesn't join up flush with the bottom of the iPhone, leaving a gap, so dirt can get in. I'd prefer a closed design there.

All your iPhone buttons remain accessible when inside the PowerSkin Battery Case. There's a deep cutout for the ring/silence switch and volume buttons, but it's not too hard to get into. The on/off button is covered, however, and uses a pass-through which required quite a bit of pressure to successfully toggle. You might need to do some extra pushups first. The camera, likewise, is well cut out.

The good

  • Provides as much power as a fully charged iPhone
  • Silicone is light, soft-touch, and shock absorbing

The bad

  • Botton doesn't sit flush

The bottom line

If you're rocking an iPhone 4S or an iPhone 4 and you absolutely need to make it through the day and then some, the PowerSkin Charge case is a solid choice. If you want something slimmer or sleeker, you'll need to look at other options, but if you don't mind the bulk offset by the lightness, soft-touch, and shock absorbing properties of the silicone, give the PowerSkin a look.

African Cup tickets on sale, now to fill stadiums

By GERALD IMRAY

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 3:37 p.m. ET Sept. 26, 2012

JOHANNESBURG (AP) -South Africa was the latest African Cup of Nations host to face the challenge of filling stadiums with the continent's generally poor football fans as tickets for next year's tournament went on sale on Wednesday.

In an attempt to reverse a trend of poor crowds at recent African championships, 2013 organizers kept tickets relatively cheap and easily available having already opted for smaller stadiums to give them a better chance of sellouts.

The last African Cup in Gabon and Equatorial Guinea was hurt by images of empty seats at some games, especially when the home teams weren't playing.

Tickets for South Africa range from the cheapest at $6 up to $24 for the most expensive seats at the final. Supporters could watch the semifinals and final for around $12 for each game and organizers also offered additional discounts of up to 20 percent to fans who buy early for the matches next January and February.

"The ticket pricing strategy was reached looking at the economy of the country and the levels of unemployment, people's disposable income as well as the time that the tournament is taking place," organizing committee chief executive Mvuzo Mbebe said.

There are also worries that the Jan. 19-Feb. 10 tournament could come too soon after the expensive holiday season.

But South Africa still hopes to sell 500,000 tickets for the 32 matches at the 16-team tournament, relying on the combination of affordable prices and easy access while, crucially, hoping to revive the excitement generated by the country's staging of the World Cup two years ago.

South Africa also apparently learnt from the World Cup in 2010 by making sure tickets could be bought at traditional shop outlets as well as online.

At the World Cup, the initial internet-only sales procedure was problematic as the majority of African football fans do not have credit cards or access to the internet and prefer to buy their tickets over the counter.

African Cup games next year will be played at five stadiums, but the country's showpiece 94,000-seat FNB Stadium in Soweto - which was completely renovated for the World Cup - was reserved for the opening game and the final only.

Smaller venues in the northern cities of Rustenburg and Nelspruit and their fellow World Cup stadiums in Durban and Port Elizabeth will host the bulk of the games as South Africa hopes to re-ignite fans' interest following the historic first World Cup on the continent.

However, the Cup of Nations will undoubtedly face challenges getting fans as excited for games involving possible qualifiers like Cape Verde and Central African Republic as they were when Spain, Brazil and England were in town for South Africa's last major football tournament.

(AP) ? A quiet day on Wall Street turned into the worst sell-off in three months after a Federal Reserve official said he doubted the bank's effort to boost economic growth would work.

Charles Plosser, president of the Fed's Philadelphia branch, told an audience Tuesday that the Fed's effort to support the economy would likely fall short of its goals. And if the Fed looks ineffective, it could undermine future Fed action.

The speech probably startled some investors who had faith in the Fed's latest plan, said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer Harris Private Bank. The plan includes buying $40 billion in mortgage bonds each month until the economy improves.

"So many investors have bought into the illusion," he said. "And it was like Plosser pulled up the curtain on the Wizard of Oz."

The Standard & Poor's 500 index lost 15.30 points, its fourth straight decline, to close at 1,441.59. The 1.05 percent drop was the worst for the S&P since June 25.

The Dow Jones industrial average lost 101.37 points to close at 13,457.55. Caterpillar tugged the Dow down, losing 4 percent. The world's largest maker of bulldozers and other heavy equipment said late Monday that slower economic growth around the world dampened its earnings forecast. Its stock sank $3.86 to $87.01.

Stocks enjoyed one of their biggest rallies of the year Sept. 6 after Mario Draghi, the president of the European Central Bank, laid out a plan to buy unlimited amounts of government bonds to lower borrowing costs for Europe's debt-burdened countries.

A week later, Fed Chairman Ben Bernanke announced the central bank's open-ended mortgage bond-buying program and pledged to hold interest rates at super-low levels into 2015.

The S&P set a four-year closing high of 1,465 the next day, Sept. 14, but has drifted lower since and fallen back almost to where it was before Bernanke's announcement.

On Tuesday, a batch of encouraging economic reports gave the stock market a nudge in morning trading. House prices rose in major cities for a third straight month, and a gauge of consumer confidence came in surprisingly high.

More surprising than those two economic reports was the Richmond Federal Reserve's strong reading on regional manufacturing, a recent trouble spot, said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors.

"Look at that. There were three data points on the economy and we crushed them," said Phil Orlando, chief equity strategist at Federated Investors.

But sagging profits could drag on the stock market in the coming weeks, Orlando said. Caterpillar joined a growing collection of companies have lowered their earnings forecasts. FedEx, a bellwether of world trade, said that shipping has sunk to recession-like levels. Railroad giant Norfolk Southern has also warned that falling shipments and sinking coal prices will likely drag down its earnings.

Wall Street analysts now estimate that corporate profits will sink this quarter from a year earlier. That would be the first such drop in three years.

The Nasdaq composite index dropped 43.05 points to 3,117.73. Google's stock touched an all-time high in early trading, clearing $764, but closed the trading day at $749.16.

Apple, the largest public company in the world, lost $17.25, or 2.5 percent, to close at $673.54. It has lost more than $26 in two days. Apple is the biggest component in the S&P but is not included in the Dow, helping explain why the S&P suffered a greater percentage decline than the Dow's 0.8 percent.

The closely watched Standard & Poor's/Case Shiller index of national house prices increased 1.2 percent in July compared with the same month in 2011. Prices rose from the previous month in all 20 major cities tracked by the report for the third month in a row.

The Conference Board said its gauge of consumer confidence shot to a seven-month high in September, trumping forecasts by a large margin. People surveyed said they were more optimistic about the job market.

The Federal Reserve's manufacturing index, which surveys companies in the central Atlantic region, increased after shrinking for three months as businesses turned more optimistic. Companies said they anticipate more orders and shipments even as employment dips. The index turned positive in September after a negative reading in August.

Treasury prices rose as traders shifted money into safe assets. The 10-year Treasury yield, the benchmark for mortgages and other loans, dipped to 1.67 percent, down from 1.71 percent late Monday.

It's easy to see acne sufferers from afar. But it's not so easy to see the bacteria that trigger their skin inflammation. Now, researchers hope to clear out those bacteria, and clear up the acne, with viruses. The work is in the journal mBio. [Laura J. Marinelli et al., Propionibacterium acnes Bacteriophages Display Limited Genetic Diversity and Broad Killing Activity against Bacterial Skin Isolates]

Many thriving microbe communities inhabit the human face. There is, for example, the pimple-producing species Propionibacterium acnes. Some antibiotic acne treatments have been used so widely that these bacteria have developed resistance. Other treatments cause unpleasant side effects.

But there are viruses that target the bacteria, called phages. Researchers isolated 11 phages from people with and without acne, and sequenced the viral genomes. Phages are generally a diverse bunch, but these viruses were close relatives to each other?which makes sense, as they all evolved to attack bacteria that live in a specific environment: facial hair follicles.

When pitted against the facial bacteria in the lab, the viruses easily mopped up their acne-causing foes. Which may make the phages good candidates for acne treatment?a treatment that might truly go viral.

Retiring Sen. Snowe of Maine plans book for 2013

(AP) ? Sen. Olympia Snowe plans a few words about politics even after leaving office.

The Maine Republican, who has cited Washington's partisan atmosphere as the reason she is stepping down this year, has a deal with Weinstein Books for a publication due out in the spring. Weinstein is billing the book, currently untitled, as a "memoir and call to action."

"The point is that elected officials have a responsibility to take on the issues that are confronting the nation," Snowe, who plans to work on her book with a collaborator, said Monday during a brief telephone interview.

Snowe and fellow Maine Sen. Susan Collins have long been moderate Republicans, an increasingly marginalized part of the party. Snowe, a consistent vote-winner for decades, shocked Maine's political establishment in February when she announced she would not seek re-election after three terms. She said at the time that the "sensible center has now virtually disappeared."

During the interview Monday, the 65-year-old Snowe listed several reasons for her unhappiness with Washington, from the influence of money to the growing trend of politicians appealing to their "base" and not to the broader public.

"We are constantly mired in ideological/philosophical debates with no solution," she said.

Her choice of publishers is an example of working with the other party. Weinstein Books' Harvey Weinstein is not just an Oscar-winning film producer, but a prominent Democrat. Snowe said she was grateful to Weinstein for his "strong interest" in the book and in "having this voice heard, this voice of practicality."

"Senator Snowe's core message ? that bipartisan cooperation is critical to effective government ? is equally true of book publishing," Weinstein said in a statement. "This is a book that should be read by all Americans, whether liberal or conservative."

For her book, Snowe was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, a Democrat with his own bipartisan history. Barnett's clients include such top Democrats as President Barack Obama and former President Bill Clinton and such top Republicans as former President George W. Bush and former Vice President Dick Cheney.

Financial terms for the book were not disclosed. According to Weinstein Books, Snowe will share her "family story as the daughter of a Greek immigrant and first generation American, and being orphaned at the age of 9 and widowed at age 26, tragedies that influenced her approach to public service and formed her philosophy.

"Additionally, it (her book) will include her insider's accounts of her legislative experiences with some of the monumental issues and key political figures of the last 30 ? the 2008 economic crisis, health care reform, and the debt ceiling among them."

Weinstein Books is a partnership with the Perseus Books Group and part of the multimedia Weinstein Company co-founded by brothers Harvey and Bob Weinstein.

Recreation and sports: Manual For Bicycle Shoppers - Ariel Harvey's ...

Purchasing a ?bicycle can ?look like an ?effortless enough ?job without any ?drawbacks or ?long term glitches. As ?straightforward a ?method as it may seem to be, buying a ?bicycle is more involving than ?just simply ?heading to hardware or ?bicycle ?stores and ?picking the one you want, ?based on color, ?measurements or design. This ?write-up will ?seek to ?provide a novice ?biker's guide to prospective bike ?purchasers and point out ?important ?factors to ?think of before ?getting one.

Bicycles ?are available in different ?forms, ?styles and ?dimensions and are ?geared up for a variety of ?operations. There are ?various ?kinds of ?bicycle to ?pick from and some of the ?elements to ?think about before ?arriving at a final ?selection on which one to ?purchase include where you will ?use your ?bike, what you will ?utilize the ?bike for, how ?frequent you will ride it and whether you have any ?physical health ?problems, amongst others. These are but a ?handful of pointers to ?take into account. These and ?a lot more ?factors to consider will guide you into what ?kind of ?bicycle to buy. It is ?essential to answer all these ?queries before ?getting your bicycle, as these will ?enlighten your ?judgment on which ?sort of bicycle to ?buy .

?Various ?kinds of ?bikes serve different ?features and ?have different ?functions. The cargo bicycles come ?geared up with a cargo carrier and are more balanced to ?allow you to ?hold cargo as you cycle. The ?mtb or BMX bikes as they are popularly known are more suitable for mountaineering and hiking - they also come in handy for uneven off ?route ?surfaces or for bad ?routes. Their ?style and make can take harsh and ?jagged terrain. ?Convenience ?bikes are ?excellent for your everyday and ?normal cycling either for ?health and fitness or for going to work purposes. They come handy for that ?swift cycling to the ?stores ?to buy ?breadstuff or for an early ?daytime ?physical fitness ?biking exercise. These are just a few ?samples of ?kinds of bicycles to consider.

When ?getting a ?bike, it is ?crucial to take the ?dealers advice with some caution. Every seller ?desires to clear their stock and when it ?pertains to ?bikes, you are ?likely to be ?informed that their bikes on display or stock are the ?greatest. Do your own research if possible, shop around and find out more, before ?purchasing, to avoid future disappointment and ?owning a ?bike that does not ?serve for your ?demands and ?passions . ?One more ?aspect to consider is the ?rate of the ?bicycle you ?desire to ?get. If it costs an arm and a leg, it does not ?always ?imply that it is the best on the ?industry. If the ?rate almost ?match-up that of a scooter, chances are you are ?much better off with a ?motorcycle than a bicycle.

Having highlighted a ?couple of ?points to ?think about when buying a bike, the ?decision is now yours. To be ?updated beforehand ?assists you to get ahead.

PFT: Titans' 44-41 OT win as thrilling as it sounds

Detroit Lions v Tennessee TitansGetty Images

If the late NFL Films President Steve Sabol is up there in the great editing room in the sky, he?s having a wonderful time preparing to put together the highlights of today?s Lions-Titans game, and he?s writing an amazing script for the late NFL Films ?Voice of God? narrator, John Facenda. Because today?s Lions-Titans game had everything that NFL Films has always celebrated ? everything we love about football.

In as exciting a football game as you?ll ever see, the Titans beat the Lions 44-41 in overtime, a final score that doesn?t even begin to tell the whole story.

The Titans scored touchdowns on a 65-yard punt return by Tommie Campbell, a 61-yard catch by Jared Cook, a 105-yard kickoff return by Darius Reynaud, a 71-yard catch by Nate Washington and a 72-yard fumble return by Alterraun Verner to beat the Lions. The Titans became the first team in NFL history to score five touchdowns of more than 60 yards in one game.

And yet the Titans almost lost, thanks to a furious final 18 seconds of the fourth quarter from the Lions in which quarterback Shaun Hill, in for an injured Matthew Stafford, threw a touchdown pass to Calvin Johnson, then (after the Lions recovered an onside kick) heaved one into the end zone where it was caught by Titus Young to tie the score on the final play of regulation.

That sent the game into overtime, where the Titans methodically marched down the field but stalled deep in Detroit territory and had to settle for a field goal. On the Lions? ensuing possession, they too methodically marched down the field but stalled deep in Tennessee territory. But the Lions, when faced with a fourth-and-1, shockingly called for a quarterback sneak instead of a field goal to extend overtime. That quarterback sneak went nowhere, and the Titans won.

Some of the statistics from this game look insane. Not only the five long touchdowns by the Titans, but the fact that Hill didn?t even come into the game until after the two-minute warning in the fourth quarter, but still passed for 172 yards. There?s also the fact that the Titans spent all day focusing all their coverage on Johnson ? and yet he still caught 10 passes for 164 yards.

Basically, there were big plays from all the offensive playmakers except the guy who is supposed to be one of the NFL?s biggest playmakers, Titans running back Chris Johnson. The Lions? defense bottled up Johnson, limiting him to 24 yards on 14 carries.

There were 46 points scored in the game?s crazy fourth quarter, and the game still hadn?t been decided by the end of that. It was an amazing game, the kind of game that left both teams exhausted as they walked off the field and shaking their heads about what they had just participated in. This was the kind of game that deserves to be immortalized by NFL Films.

Samsung still making Apple?s A6 chip, electron microscopes reveal

Apple and Samsung have many beefs. But for now, it appears, Samsung is still manufacturing the A6 processor inside Apple?s flagship iPhone 5.

That?s the conclusion reached by UBM TechInsights, whose engineers have been carefully disassembling the iPhone 5 since it launched Friday. Unlike other teardown teams, TechInsight?s engineers don?t stop when they expose the circuit boards and chip packages inside the phone. These guys pried the A6 chip out, stripped off its cover, and have been carefully shaving it down, layer by layer, and examining it with electron microscopes.

?All signs point to Samsung doing the manufacturing,? TechInsights technical research manager Allan Yogasingam said in an email to VentureBeat. ?Manufacturing semiconductors is like a fingerprint, as each process is unique to the fabrication facility, in this case Samsung?s 32nm process technology.?

Yogasingam also provided the images below, from his team?s research into the A6 chip. Among other revelations, the A6 has a triple-core GPU (the graphics engine of the chip).

The ?32nm process? in Yogasingam?s comment refers to the average size of the components, such as transistors, in the chip. One of the ways semiconductor makers increase the speed and power of chips is by developing equipment that can make smaller and smaller components, enabling them to keep pace with Moore?s Law ? the market imperative to double chip performance without increasing price every 18 months.

Yogasingam adds more technical detail:

Our initial SEM cross-sections of the A6 processor show metal and dielectric layering that is almost identical to that used in the previous A5 processor found in the Apple TV, which was, as well, likely manufactured by Samsung. The process node appears to be held constant at 32nm. Examination of the gate stack shows a Gate First-High K metal gate structure. The PMOS devices incorporate a Silicon Germanium layer in the active channel. More detailed analysis will confirm these results but that will take some more time.

Neither Apple nor Samsung have disclosed the manufacturing relationship for the A6. Since Samsung manufactured previous versions of the Apple-designed CPU, it makes sense for the company to continue doing so. However, manufacturers are often replaceable, and the two companies have had a nasty public feud in multiple countries? courts over the past year. Most significantly, Apple accused Samsung of ripping off its patented designs for the iPhone and iPad ? and recently won a resounding court victory in the U.S. For its part, Samsung has accused Apple of violating communications patents it holds. In light of the disputes between the two companies, Apple recently replaced Samsung as the maker of its iPhone displays, preferring to use the services of Sharp instead.

But such switches aren?t so easy to do with semiconductor technology, which depends on extremely advanced fabrication techniques and multimillion-dollar equipment. It?s likely that there are no manufacturers outside of Samsung capable of making A6 chips at this point.

So, for now, the relationship continues ? in this domain, at least.

Meanwhile, Apple has asked a Korean court to forbid Samsung from selling its iPhone-infringing devices in the U.S., and is asking the Korean company to cough up another billion dollars.

Ex-NBA Player Stephon Marbury?s Wife to Star on ?Basketball Wives?

Another former NBA baller's wife joins the cast

From TMZ

Can VH1?s popular show ?Basketball Wives? get any crazier?

Well if Stephon Marbury?s wife, Tasha Marbury, is in any way like the ex-NBA baller, we have another controversial addition to the show.

Producers of the show told VH1 they have tried to get Tasha on the show numerous times before. They said they feel she is a perfect fit because she?s friends with some of the other wives, and is an actual basketball wife at the moment.

Marbury hasn?t played in the NBA for three years now and is currently playing in China.
