Essex Police ? IPCC find ?Failures? re Domestic Violence | Tina Royles

The Independenant Police Complaints Commission has today issued their report following their investigation into a Domestic Violence Case in Essex which resulted in a ?Double Murder? Investigation.

The Case in which the IPCC are refering to is the murder of Christine Chambers and her daughter Shania who were shot by David Oakes on 06th June 2011. Oakes was Chambers ex partner and the father of Shania.

Although it has been highlighted by Christine?s father in news reports that the Murder Investigation Team were supportive and did a good job; he and the report have highlighted more could have been done in the run up to the double murder in the previous incidents of domestic violence reported to Essex Police.

Whilst Essex Police?s Assistant Chief Constable Maurice Mason has in news reports today stated the force has introduced 76 new posts in the Public Protection Team (Which oversee?s Vulnerable People including Domestic Violence), and also introduced a dedicated Domestic Abuse Intelligence Team; all which are positive steps, the IPCC Commissioner Rachel Cerfontyne in the report has made recommendations such as a Process of Sharing Information between forces and agencies such as Social Services, Courts, Solicitors (In particular Child Custody Proceedings). Others failures highlighted were:

Lack of Adequate Training
Insufficient Resources allocated to Domestic Violence Cases
Poor Oversight
Failure of Police Systems

So why apart from the obvious as in its a Domestic Violence Issue am I raising it here?

From 1990 ? 2006 I was a Police Officer within Essex Police; spending my first five years?at Braintree where the double murder happened, I transferred to Harlow Division in 1995; where I became heavily involved in dealing with Domestic Violence; first as an DV `Expert` on the response shift, and then moving into the role of Domestic Violence Officer. I spent the majority of my career as the Domestic Violence Officer, and was a driving force within Essex Police in putting Domestic Violence on the `map` or `radar`. I was a Chair of a forward thinking Domestic Violence Forum pushing forward key projects and initiative to help all involved in Domestic Violence.? As the Domestic Violence Officer I implemented many key strategies which were implemented forcewide, and held groundbreaking conferences to raise awareness of domestic violence. I compiled and delivered training for The Essex Magistrates Association which was provided for all Essex Magistrates which was thought so useful Domestic Violence training is delivered on a rolling programme for all Magistrates, I also delivered domestic violence training for many other key agencies on a local and Essex wide basis.

I?was recognised by the then Chief Constable David Stevens to be a driving force and instrumental in work around Domestic Violence forming DV monitoring groups, organising publicity launches, raising the profile of Essex Police, leading to a significant increase in reported incidents, and introducing successful repeat victim/offender strategies, in particular reference was made to the fact that my professionalism, and my dedication, not only brought credit to myself but to Essex Police. I was then sent on his behalf and included in key meetings and training on domestic violence on a countywide and national basis..

I left Essex Police in 2006, and have continued working in the field of Domestic Violence, within a forum environment meeting the government targets on domestic violence, as a manager of a domestic violence perpetrator programme, but have continued to broaden my practioner and strategic knowledge and experiece within domestic violence. I have added to this substantial academic experience and knowledge in this field and also with relationships, continuing to develop and deliver tailor made training around domestic violence for professionals, and providing consultancy.

I continue to also provide `hands on` work through my therapy private practice: Selyor Therapy Centre?which?specifically involves?domestic violence counselling, and relationship counselling.

This wide ranging and unique experience and knowledge has meant my comments have been sought on both a national and international level on domestic violence cases highlighted in the press.

With all my experience and knowledge both previously internally and externally to Essex Police it saddens me to hear of their failings, and feel that they have taken a step backwards, it is?also that another incident has occured in which a fatalily has happened. Despite improvements sadly it wont be the last incident that is a serious one or indeed a fatality, and that applies to any force or agency that has dealings with the area of domestic violence.

For any agency or Police Force (In particular Essex Police) that would like consultancy or training on Domestic Violence please contact me through either of my websites.

Also for victims/survivors of domestic violence, or family members trying to move forward with their lives after a domestic violence experience then again contact with me can be made through the below websites.

Lumosity, a company that creates online fitness games, has raised $31.5 million in Series D funding from Discovery Communications with existing investors Menlo Ventures, FirstMark Capital, Harrison Metal and Norwest Venture Partners are also participating in the funding. This brings Lumosity?s total funding to over $70 million to date.

Created by neuroscientists from Stanford University, Lumosity develops games and exercises that aim to improve core cognitive abilities and enable users to remember more, think faster and perform better at work and school.

Lumosity currently has 40-plus games that focus on memory, attention, flexibility, speed of processing and problem solving. On average, Lumosity users experienced a greater than 10% improvement in working memory and greater than 20% improvement in divided attention after 10 hours of playing the brain games.

The company says it currently holds the world?s largest database of human cognitive performance; and it analyzes this massive amount of data to learn more about the human brain.

In the last four years over 25 million people have joined Lumosity, with 10 million joining in the last year alone. The company has paying subscribers from over 180 countries, has expanded to mobile with an iPhone app, and revenues have grown 25% quarter-over-quarter since its launch in 2007.

The new funding will be used towards further research into human cognitive performance, expanding reach and marketing and branding.

Researchers Highlight Treatment, Research Needs For Homeless ...

A new paper from North Carolina State University calls for more research on how to help homeless families with children who are facing mental-health problems, as well as changes in how shelters are treating these families.

?We wanted to lay out the specific mental-health challenges facing homeless parents and children living in shelters and transitional housing,? says Dr. Mary Haskett, a professor of psychology at NC State and co-author of the paper. ?This is important, because at any point in time there are approximately one million families with children who are homeless in the United States.?

The paper includes recommendations on shelter practices and future research. The paper was authored by researchers from NC State, Kutztown University, the University of Minnesota and the University of Kansas.

The paper calls on shelters to take a ?trauma informed? approach to their operations, meaning shelter staff should be aware that most families they serve have had traumatic experiences that shape the way they view the world. ?This should be accounted for in the shelter?s rules and regulations, and inform the services they provide,? Haskett says. ?Very few shelters currently take this approach.?

For example, homeless families often feel the need to be able to close and lock doors to their personal space to feel safe. Many shelters do not allow this, because they want to be able to monitor residents? activities.

Future research should focus on parenting in homeless families, Haskett says.

?The mental-health community knows a lot about parenting approaches and interventions that help parents and reduce the risk of child maltreatment. But we don?t know how to modify these approaches so they can be successful in a shelter environment. We need more research in this area, to give us a solid foundation for developing approaches that can help homeless families.?

The paper was written under the auspices of the American Psychological Association?s task force on promoting positive parenting in the context of family homelessness, which is co-chaired by Haskett and paper lead author Dr. Staci Perlman of Kutztown University. The work was done in conjunction with a task force of the American Orthopsychiatric Association that also focuses on issues pertaining to homelessness.

The paper, ?Promoting Positive Parenting in the Context of Homelessness,? was co-authored by Dr. Beryl Ann Cowan, a psychologist in private practice; Dr. Abigail Gewirtz of the University of Minnesota; and Lauren Stokes of the University of Kansas. The paper was published this month in the American Journal of Orthopsychiatry.

?Promoting Positive Parenting in the Context of Homelessness?

Authors: Staci M. Perlman, Kutztown University; Beryl Ann Cowan; Abigail Gewirtz, University of Minnesota; Mary Haskett, North Carolina State University; and Lauren Stokes, the University of Kansas

Published: August 2012, American Journal of Orthopsychiatry

Abstract: Recent national reports suggest that nearly 1,000,000 families with children experience homelessness, and that this number is rising (National Center on Family Homelessness, 2009; U.S. Conference of Mayors, 2010; U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, 2011). Families experiencing homelessness are disproportionately more likely to have experienced economic, health, and social risk factors. These experiences can adversely influence the parent-child relationship. The purpose of this article is to: (a) review the literature on the determinants and contextual issues of parenting in shelters; (b) describe specific programs that are focused on positive parenting in the context of homelessness; and (c) provide practice, research, and policy recommendations for supporting positive parenting among families living without homes.

Not Happy? This Chick Says What You're Lacking Is An Affair!

Telegraph- The setting is the quiet corner of an Italian restaurant in the City; the players are George, an IT specialist, and Zoe, who wears a pretty dress and a big smile; they drink an especially good bottle of wine and when they get to coffee he reaches over and kisses her on the mouth. She surprises him by kissing him back. To onlookers it might be the classic opening scene of a traditional romance.

Yet both parties are married to other people, whom they have no intention of leaving. Although they will go on to enjoy all the spoils of a relationship, from intimate phone calls to Christmas shopping trips and, of course, regular sex, this is understood from the outset. They are in fact launching into a ?playfair?, a 21st-century affair in which would-be adulterers meet, via specialist dating websites, to enjoy the excitement of an illicit relationship without any of the domestic fallout.

Alongside the internet dating revolution, these ?playfairs? are evidence of a potentially dramatic shift in British marriage. As dating websites open up a global shop window of sexual possibilities, as life expectancy continues to rise and we become increasingly sexually aware, how can we still take the crushing old rules of fidelity, that turn marriage into a prison, for granted? Why should we not be able to recapture the heady thrills of youth, while protecting a secure home life?

The time has come, alongside the technology, to redraw the rules of marriage for the 21st century. Just as the Pill opened up premarital sex in the Sixties, the internet is opening up a whole new culture of affairs among married people. Sex has become a major leisure activity of our time, accessible to everyone, married or not, rich and poor. It?s time to start honing our seduction skills and join the playground.

Yet it is the most puritanical nations, including Britain and America, that have traditionally resisted the notion of adultery most rigorously. Here, couples endure the challenges of child care, work pressures, mid?life crisis and dwindling marital sex against a backdrop of repressive Anglo-Saxon hang?ups about infidelity, seen always in pejorative terms such as ?cheating?.

And they do so at a cost. Statistics confirm that British and American divorce rates are among the highest in the world. Around half of American first marriages end in divorce, closely followed by a third of first British marriages, floundering under unrealistic pressures, often celibate marital beds and drastic overreactions to infidelities.

I have always been baffled by the sour and rigid English view of affairs. Marital love and passion only rarely provide an equally rich source of the exalted feelings, transports of delight and misery associated with love and romance. Affairs are about excitement, being alive, seduction, flirtation, love, affection, sexual bliss, lust, caution, eroticism, fantasy, danger, adventure, exploration and the determined refusal to grow old gracefully.

There is also evidence that the more permissive the attitudes of a country, the longer marriages last. In France an affair is dubbed an aventure, free of insinuations of betrayal. It is estimated that a quarter of men and women are enjoying casual flings and affairs at any one time. Indeed, the conventionality of affairs is displayed in the concept of le cinq ? sept, the magical space between 5pm and 7pm when men see their mistresses.

In Japan a tradition of geishas has evolved into a modern society where sex is seen as a pleasure to be enjoyed. Japanese pornography is consumed openly, by women as well as men, on the metro and in other public places. Sex is everywhere and it is also clearly separated from marriage.

Meanwhile, Nordic countries are already way ahead of the game. Couples openly discuss ?parallel relationships? within marriage. These range from affairs between work colleagues lasting years to holiday flings lasting a few days. Almost half of Finnish men and almost one third of Finnish women have had at least one significant parallel relationship. Yet marriage is a protected and respected institution in these countries, where families can function and flourish without compromise.

And let?s not ignore the past in drawing up a new 21st?century road map of adultery. If the internet offers a direct line to affairs, with a proliferation of websites for adults seeking a sexual partner outside of their marriage, it is worth remembering that our richer ancestors practised their own privileged version. Emperors cavorted with courtesans, kings chose their wives for political manoeuvres and their mistresses for company, the aristocracy married for money and took lovers for pleasure.

So why have modern British couples resisted for so long and are they finally ready for this new 21st?century approach to marriage? Inevitably there is the morality question. Even as religion has lost its influence, Britain has remained coy about openly embracing sex for pleasure, stubbornly conflating sexuality with procreation.

There is also the army of therapists and counsellors who continue to pedal their own secret agenda of enforced exclusive monogamy. This killjoy attitude frames affairs as deviant escapism and fantasies without merit for people who have failed to grow up. Counsellors form a kind of emotional and intellectual police intent on keeping the door to infidelity locked.

Meanwhile, British feminists have already missed the chance to find a new kind of modern sexual morality appropriate to the 21st century. In practice, Anglo-Saxon feminism never liberated itself from the Puritan morality that downplays or rejects all forms of pleasure as sinful.

But sex is no more a moral issue than eating a good meal. The fact that we eat most meals at home with spouses and partners does not preclude eating out in restaurants to sample different cuisines and ambiences, with friends or colleagues. Anyone rejecting a fresh approach to marriage and adultery, with a new set of rules to go with it, fails to recognise the benefits of a revitalised sex life outside the home.

Already two American economists, David Blanchflower and Andrew Oswald, have attempted to measure happiness through sexual fulfilment in monetary terms. They estimated that increasing the frequency of sexual intercourse from once a month to at least once a week was equivalent to ?32,000 a year in happiness. They also estimated that a lasting marriage provided the equivalent of ?64,000 a year. If you add the two together, an affair providing lots of sex and an enduring marriage, that?s a recipe for a lot of happiness.
It is also a handsome sum when you consider how much longer people are living. In pre-industrial Britain marriages only lasted about 20 years, due to early death. Today, marriages can last 40 to 60 years. It is no coincidence that the peak ages for affairs in Britain and the United State is 45 for a woman and 55 for a man.

Of course, it would be misleading to suggest that married dating does not have a certain morality of its own. Just as there are rules for dating non-married people, a new set of rules is necessary to navigate the way through the secretive world of married dating on the internet.

For many interviewees that I spoke to, whose names have been changed, negotiating the new rules can be a fraught business. Married people have less spare time and are often more specific and cautious in their search. Amy liked a man in his advert, but was put off by his wearing a shabby grey cardigan under his suit jacket; Kate was delighted on meeting Benjamin, elegant, clever and amusing, until it emerged he was into very experimental sex; when Oliver met Scarlett at her house for a first date, a swinging party was already under way, which was not what he had in mind.

But regardless of who you meet, the first rule is ?never in your own back yard?, where you are most exposed to discovery. This is one of the successes of the websites: they allow everyone to reach well beyond their own social circle. Both parties can quickly establish that they want the same thing and that they are equally committed to secrecy and discretion.

It is also a world away from the deeply unfair old-style ?asymmetric? affairs, in which hapless wives would be left at home while older, richer husbands wooed younger, poorer women ? often in the workplace ? disparagingly referred to as a ?bit on the side?.

If anything, married women are at an astonishing advantage in this 21st-century world of modern adultery, not least because of the disparity in sexual desire in modern marriages. Recent sex surveys all prove that the received wisdom about men wanting more sex than their wives is not an unfair stereotype but a fact. The gap in sexual desire between men and women is observed in every country and culture where such surveys have been carried out.

Unsurprisingly a sexless, or low-sex, marriage, in which couples have sex less than once a month, appears to be the most common root cause for married internet affairs. In Britain, according to the British sex survey of sexual lifestyles, couples aged up to 60 had sex around 10 times a month in the first two years of their relationship, with a sharp decline to an average of twice a month after six years together.

This puts women, entering the new online ?meet-market? of married dating sites, in a dramatically stronger position. While dating websites for singles are dominated by women looking for ?the one?, those for married people are dominated by men looking for a sexual adventure. The ratio is around one woman to every 13 men, giving the women the power to dictate terms, from dates at the most expensive restaurants and luxury gifts to financial rewards.

Take the case of Peter, a rich 62-year-old judge who lives in a beautiful historical country house with his lively wife. He regularly travelled into central London to sit as a judge in important commercial disputes. He also stayed in the same hotel, with views over the Thames. After several years of this routine he began to welcome the idea of a sexy girlfriend to entertain him during his weekday stays. He signed on to a dating website.

When he met his first date, Maya ? beautiful and in her thirties ? he could not believe his luck. They had a cheerful and flirty lunch, sitting in the sunshine. At the end, they discussed meeting again. Maya suggested a monthly fee for unlimited time with him at his convenience. Peter laughed, assuming she was joking. He considered an expensive dinner generous enough.

But as he worked his way through a similar series of first dates, that were also not followed up, he realised that Maya was right: a crucial rule in this modern world of adultery is that the women are able to call the shots, especially when the men are past their prime.

There are, however, as many success stories. Claire had been happily married all her life to a much older man. When the marriage became sexless she started a sexually rewarding affair with a younger man that lasted eight years. When her husband died, she remarried another kind, loyal and considerate man. But she sought out an affair again, on a dating website for married people, because she wanted the excitement of a lover who would always be a novelty. Already, for Claire and others like her, the new adultery is a way of life.

Crucially the globalisation of sexual cultures facilitated by the internet, where it is said sex in one shape or another constitutes half the traffic, has helped to bring far more varied and adventurous practices into closer view. As a result, we can no longer assume that our own perspective is the only one going, and that it is inevitable and ?natural?.
On the contrary, the emphasis on sex as a leisure activity in consumer society allows people in celibate marriages to see their situation as something that can and should be remedied, instead of something to put up with. Websites make it easy and provide mass access to finding your own mistress or lover. Something that used to be a luxury of kings and millionaires is now open to all. Many get lucky, some go away empty-handed, but either way British marriage is finally taking a walk on the wild side.

Energy Investing: The Drums Of August, Israel Is Not Bluffing

Life requires energy. Investments in food, oil, gasoline, natural gas, solar and wind seem likely to jump in price as soon as Israel and/or Iran take the next step.

Foreign Policy magazine: The Drums of August, Israel is not bluffing:

This summarizes the carefully worded case made last week in the Wall Street Journal by Israel's ambassador to the United States, Michael Oren. His article was nothing less than a case for war, and, over lunch on Friday, Aug. 10, he underscored to me how much thought and care was put into its drafting. (Oren is, for the record, my longtime very good friend.) The response to the article included the unlikely endorsement of its core points by Khalid Al Khalifa, the foreign minister of Bahrain, who tweeted it with the words "Time Is Short For Iran Diplomacy."

"The Drums of August" was not accidentally selected. At least within military circles "The Drums of War" is a common phase for the posturing in the approach to conflict. "The Guns of August" covered the approach to World War I. We have our last warning.

No one writes an article like this, emphasizing "for the record, my longtime very good friend", the Israeli Ambassador to the US, without assuring their points are correct. Only exploding bombs would be more clear.

Timing of Israeli strikes seems less than a year, not likely before the Nov 2012 election. A preemptive strike by Iran should not be ruled out. Sabotage against US oil infrastructure, destabilization of Mexico and actions by Venezuela are well within Iranian capabilities.

Fundamentals will continue to drive energy prices higher. US oil inventories sit at 366 million barrels (mb). We use about 19 million barrels per day (mb/d). Based on gasoline outages in the US Southeast in 2008, gasoline outages occur when inventories drop to about 290 mb.

America has 4 days spare capacity to manage a 365 day food cycle ((366 - 290) ? 19) or about 1.1%. As a thought experiment about how narrow a safety margin this, stand 10 feet from the edge of the helipad on a 10 story building. You feel uncomfortable getting any closer to the edge. A 1.1% safety margin would require you stand less than 2 inches from the edge. The Strategic Petroleum Reserve adds only 90 days supply against that 365 day food cycle.

Food has similar inventory risks, compounded by the drought.

As people become aware of the tiny public safety margins, they will likely scramble to build personal reserves of food and energy. Gasoline supply shock in the US Southeast in Sep/Oct 2008 provides an example (see image). When public inventories hit about 190 mb, drivers shifted from mostly empty to mostly full tanks. Nearly 20 mb were pulled out of the public inventory causing supply outages that lasted 8 weeks.

Before the Rural Electrification Administration subsidized power, more than 600,000 water and electric windmills were sold in the US. Vast numbers of roofs in India and China have solar thermal water heaters because in an unsubsidized market, it is the cheapest way to get hot water.

Life requires energy. As uncertainty grows, I believe people will invest in sources of energy, food and land. A 10% to 300% increase in home resource storage seems plausible. If behaviors shift, the vast numbers of people seem likely to move markets.

A lot of the investments will not be public, but may affect public stocks. My guess at public investments and trades are:

  • Solar: SunPower (SPWR) and SunTech (STP) relative to using their panels in an effort to re-tool transportation. A Seeking Alpha article on undervalued solar manufacturers identifies these companies: Yingli Green Energy (YGE), Trina Solar (TSL), LDK Solar (LDK), ReneSola, Ltd. (SOL), JA Solar Company, Ltd. (JASO), Jinkosolar Holding Co., Ltd. (JKS), First Solar (FSLR).
  • Railroads (480 ton-mile per gallon efficiency): Link to The Street's rating of railroad stocks and symbols for "B" rated and above: Union Pacific (UNP), Canadian National (CNI), Norfolk Southern (NSC), Kansas City Southern (KSU), Genesee & Wyoming (GWR), CSX (CSX), Canadian Pacific (CP).
  • Natural gas: Here is a primer on natural gas ETFs (Exchange Traded Funds). Of these S&P Oil and Gas Exploration & Production (XOP) and First Trust ISE-Revere Natural Gas Index Fund (FCG) are more centered on production and assets in the US.
  • Gasoline: Gasoline futures (RBOB) will continue climb for ordinary supply reasons.
  • Food, Oil and Gasoline: Please post comments for people on how to invest in food.

US and Canadian investments seem more likely to endure the winds, but that is just a guess. The scale and consequences of an Israel/Iran conflict are well beyond my abilities to guess.

PFT: 49ers' Jacobs injures knee? |? James hurt, too

Jacksonville Jaguars v New Orleans SaintsGetty Images

NFL coaches can be big jerks.? Sean Payton is an NFL coach.? Thus, Sean Payton can be a big jerk.

That pretty much summarizes the latest Outside The Lines report regarding the Saints, from ESPN?s John Barr.

We?ve heard the stories over the years.? Payton can be arrogant and vindictive and mean spirited when dealing with the media.? And, yes, he has done some things that are over the top ? as his one-year suspension confirms.

So have other coaches.

It doesn?t make it right.? But it goes with the territory.? And it flows from the physical, rough-and-tumble nature of the sport.

?He wanted every player on the team to have swag,? former Saints defensive end Charles Grant said of Payton.? ?Even if you was in the front office, he wanted you to have swag.?

The Saints have dealt with a series of problems in recent years, many of which flow from the fact that former employees (who possibly didn?t have enough ?swag?) are sufficiently unhappy with the team to file lawsuits and talk to reporters and, in the case of the bounty investigation, blow the whistle to the league.? This means that, at one or more levels, the Saints have a chronic people problem that they need to solve.

The Saints also made the poor decision (and they?ll surely admit it in hindsight) to associate with Mike Ornstein, who as we?ve been told even had a locker at the team?s facility.? ?We were trying to get rid of him,? an unnamed league official told Barr regarding Ornstein, ?because frankly he?s a cancer.?

If the league office had been trying to get rid of Ornstein, they didn?t do a good enough job of it.? And the common theory in league circles is that, if/when Ornstein becomes sufficiently disgruntled with the league office, he could bring others down with him.

During the report, Barr explained that he received a ?threatening phone call from an anonymous caller wondering why were were out to dig up information about the Saints.?? Bensel said it was later determined that the call came from team spokesman Greg Bensel?s cell phone.? Bensel denied to Barr that Bensel made the call, and Bensel didn?t say who had.

Of course, Barr didn?t mention ? at all ? his apparent swing and a miss regarding the report that G.M. Mickey Loomis had the ability in 2002 to eavesdrop on opposing coaches.? It?s possible that the ?threatening phone call? came at or about the time Barr dropped that misplaced bombshell, and it?s believed within the Saints organization (we?re told) that the Loomis story was all Barr could find after being sent to New Orleans to somehow, some way advance the ball on a bounty story that had percolated for two years, right under the noses of ESPN?s journalistic army.

Barr also didn?t say how the call was ?threatening.?? What was the specific threat?? No more access for ESPN?? Physical violence?? Possible dumping into a cold tub?

It?s almost as if the reporting has become personal.? That ESPN is playing the ?don?t mess with the guy who buys his ink by the truckload? card.

Yes, that?s a real dynamic in the media.? And it?s important for media outlets to try to strike the right balance between editorial decisions based on whether the story is truly newsworthy or whether, as in this case, ESPN simply wanted to give the Saints a taste of their own medicine.

U.S. troops deaths continue in Afghanistan

Is Operation Enduring Freedom having any success? Who knows. We do know there are still 90,000 U.S. troops in Afghanistan. Forty-one Americans died in the battle in July. This is the highest number of deaths in a month since September, 2011.

Friday, August 10th, six U.S. troops were killed by Afghan allies in two separate incidents. Thursday, August 16th, 7 U.S. troops were killed in a Black Hawk helicopter crash in Afghanistan. A man wearing an Afghan police uniform opened fire on U.S. troops in southwestern Afghanistan on Friday, killing two service members.

U.S. troops returning from the war in the Middle East continue to suffer. Suicides have reached a record high. According to the most recent Pentagon data, 244,217 U.S. military men and women have been diagnosed with TBI [traumatic brain injury], often caused by one or more exposures to bomb blasts. Thousands more are believed to have experienced undiagnosed mild brain damage from blast injuries.

As I have said before, the Soviets tried to control Afghanistan for 10 years and 100,000 troops with no luck. Is it time to pull out of Afghanistan?

Miss World beauty queens in China desert city

Global beauty queens, soaking up nomadic culture, on Saturday readied to compete for the Miss World title in the unlikely setting of a Chinese mining city on the edge of the Gobi desert.

A total of 116 contestants -- the highest number ever -- were scheduled to don their finest evening gowns and swimwear for the evening contest, which is watched annually by around a billion people around the globe.

This year it takes place on the arid and sparsely populated steppes of Inner Mongolia, where Ordos, around 700 kilometres (440 miles) from the nearest beach, makes an unusual venue for the world's biggest beauty pageant.

Reigning Miss World Ivian Sarcos of Venezuela will hand over her crown in the futuristic Ordos stadium, which sits alongside a vast town square dedicated to the mighty Mongolian warrior Genghis Khan.

The city has grown rich over the last decade on the back of a coal mining boom that has transformed it from a sandstorm-afflicted backwater into one of the wealthiest places in China.

The boom triggered a frenzy of building in the city, but the local government has been unable to fill the vast tower blocks that have sprung up, earning it the title of China's biggest ghost town.

Enthusiastic competitors seemed unfazed, expressing optimism that with the help of the pageant, the city could leave that reputation behind and take its place alongside other global centres of glitz and glamour.

"Ordos could be the next Dubai," said Marielle Wilkie, representing the Caribbean nation of Barbados.

Albanian contestant Floriana Garo chimed in with her own bold prediction.

"In ten years, this city will be booming," she said.

Architecture in Ordos -- where the city museum is shaped like an undulating blob -- is "world class", added Markysa O'Loughlin, representing St. Kitts and Nevis, also in the Caribbean.

Besides the traditional swimsuits and evening gowns, participants were also scheduled to don outlandish costumes, with some dressed as belly dancers and one, Miss Fiji, set to appear in an owl get-up.

The beauty queens have been in China rehearsing for nearly a month, soaking up traditional Mongolian culture by churning yoghurt in a nomad's yurt and donning local attire to climb a sand dune, according to Miss World's website.

Contestants vying for this year's title include a Kazakh doctor and a Peruvian medical student, but the bookmakers are tipping Miss Mexico, 20-year-old Mariana Reynoso, for the crown.

"There's a lot of good feeling surrounding the Mexican contestant," said Tony Kenny, spokesman for bookmaker William Hill, which is offering odds of 2/1 on Reynoso.

Other leading contenders include Miss China and Miss Nepal, with other countries lagging so far behind as to be "more or less write offs", according to Alex Donohue of rival bookmaker Ladbrokes.

While the popularity of the contest, first held in 1951, has waned in the West, continued interest in Asian countries ensures that the final rakes in a huge global television audience.

Sweden's Kiki Hakansson was the first Miss World, while Oscar-winning US actress Halle Berry was a finalist in 1986 and Bollywood star Aishwarya Rai took the crown in 1994.

Venezuela has produced the most Miss Worlds, with six winners, while India and Britain claim five titles each.

China has already hosted the competition five times, most recently in 2010 on the tropical southern island of Hainan.

In 2002, the pageant was moved from Nigeria to Britain after more than 200 people died in clashes sparked when a newspaper suggested the Prophet Mohammed would have chosen a wife from among the contestants had he been alive.

The Splintered Mind: In Defense of Uncharitable and Superficial ...

Charity sounds like a good thing. And it sounds like a good thing when reading the history of philosophy. If a philosopher seems to be incoherent, or self-contradictory, or if the argument seems problematically gappy or to admit of obvious counterexamples, or if the philosopher seems to be saying something patently false, we should still try to put the best possible light on the work. We shouldn't take the text at face value but instead plunge deeper, looking for the real insight beneath the surface.

Okay, maybe sometimes we should do that. But I think most historians of philosophy and most enthusiasts for particular dead philosophers take charity much too far. There are reasons to prefer uncharitable and superficial readings.

One reason is that people are stupid. Or -- more accurately and politely -- people are remarkably poor at abstract thought about big philosophical issues. Even evaluating simple conditional claims about abstract matters is a substantial cognitive challenge for us, as revealed, for example, by our hideous performance on the Wason Selection Task, and as I found in my experience writing logical reasoning questions for the LSAT years ago. (Simple formula for a killer LSAT question: put together a conditional and a negation or two in ordinary language: "Only if interest rates don't decline will the Parliament be re-elected" vs. "The Parliament will not be re-elected unless interest rates don't rise" vs. etc.) Even philosophers are bad at this. Even Kant was a normal muddleheaded human in this regard, I daresay -- as one can see in his works when he comes down from his usual hard-to-evaluate abstractions to make concretely-evaluable claims about, e.g., the a priori necessity of 18th-century physics (oops!) or about the moral horrors of masturbation. So if a philosopher seems to be getting tangled up in her own abstract logic, that appearance is reasonably likely, I think, to reflect cognitive reality.

Another reason favoring uncharitableness and superficiality involves a certain sort of externalist or public view of what philosophy is. Philosophy is not, I submit, primarily a matter of private performances of profound insight. It is a public act of stringing together words and arguments. What is on the page is the philosophy, regardless of what the philosopher might have thought in his secret heart. So if what is on the page is nonsense or self-contradictory or plainly false, the philosophy itself is nonsense or self-contradictory or plainly false. In fact, without the structure enforced by committing one's views to words, philosophical thought tends to be amorphous and weak. Thus, especially in light of the first consideration above, it's a dubious conjecture that beneath the philosopher's surface incoherences are hidden diamond arguments, only poorly expressed. Philosophical thinking is for the most part, and at its best, an outward act of explicit writing or speaking before others.

A third reason to avoid excessive charity is this: What you think is plausible or obviously true might differ enormously from what other people, especially in different cultures and times, think is plausible or obviously true. The reader of philosophy risks hiding this from herself if she insists on de-radicalizing and commonsensifying the texts she encounters, transforming Hegel or Plotinus or Ibn Rushd or Laozi into some approximation of a 21st-century New Yorker. Much of the value of reading history is lost if we insist on turning a blind eye to what seems to us to be obviously crazy -- partly because what we currently think of as "crazy" might in the end be true and partly because, even if it's not true, it's a salutary and humbling exercise to appreciate the wide range of bizarre things that philosophers have believed across history.

I hereby resolve to remain, until further notice, a superficial and uncharitable reader of the history of philosophy!

Safe States for Gay Families | Being Pregnant

SAFE1 300x265 The 8 Places Its Safe For My Family And Me To Live In The U.S.

So much goes into the planning of a family, and I?m sure all parents would agree that your concerns change and focus more on what?s best for your children than anything else. What hospital has the best delivery unit? Which daycare will be best? Which school is best? The list of ?bests? goes on and on, and it seems we all want to do what?s right for our families. But the majority of American families have one less thing to worry about ? aside from the obvious ? than gay couples do when planning their families: Where does my family have rights?

It?s a little something that?s actually not little at all. And while most of you have likely considered where you?re family is going to live, I think it?s safe to say you?ve done so for entirely different reasons than why gay families do. If you?re a straight parent, your rights abound (unless, of course, some legal battle has placed limits on those rights, but that?s another topic). Gay parents continuously face obstacles in the legal system and bureaucratic red tape that can force them to adopt their natural-born children ? which is exactly what a friend of mine is currently doing. And countless gay parents aren?t even legally considered parents to their children.

While America remains to be one of the safest places in the world for gay people, 42 of our 50 states deny gay families full rights. Some of my fellow Americans say that we (gays) should be happy with what we?ve got, that civil unions are the same as marriage (they are not, by the way ? not by a long shot), and even that we shouldn?t be raising children (which, of course, is also absurd.

I ask you to think about what?s best for your family. What would you do if you weren?t recognized as your children?s mother? What if ? God forbid ? you and your children were in an accident that left you incapable of making medical decisions for them, and your spouse ? your children?s other parent ? wasn?t legally allowed to? What would happen to your children? What if you suddenly died and the person with whom you?ve raised your children for the past 10 years had zero legal rights to them?

Rights are a serious thing. And it?s maddening when people fight so hard to deny others something they themselves lay claim to, especially when granting those rights would have zero effect on their own lives. So the next time you think or hear someone say that marriage equality doesn?t matter or shouldn?t be legal, remember that ? just like you ? we are parents who want what?s best for our children, and legal recognition of our family helps us get there. It matters.

While I comfortably live in a state that grants me full rights, it?s only one of eight places in America that does. And that scares me, because when my family and I travel across state borders, we have to keep our fingers crossed that nothing happens there that could threaten our family ? and I?m not talking about hate crimes, though that is a very real threat. I?m talking about finding ourselves in a situation that denies Sara or myself of the rights to our child or children, like the accident scenario I mentioned earlier.

Some other states recognize my marriage (and will eventually recognize my wife?s parental rights just as soon as she becomes a mother), some states have had marriage equality only to see it taken away, and others are fighting hard to make and to not make equality a reality for all couples. But as I write this, there are only eight places in the U.S. that grant full equality to all families through legalized marriage equality. And no matter what other separate-but-equal laws might be on the books elsewhere, these are the only places my family?s legal safety is guaranteed.

I've been vacationing in Massachusetts with my family since I was three years old. Every summer, we go to Martha's Vineyard ? the most magical place on the eastern seaboard. WASHINGTON STATE

I was hesitant to put Washington State on this list. Even though marriage equality is technically legal there since February of this year, it has yet to go into effect and faces a public vote this November. But I'm confident that the voters in our most northwesterly state will do the right thing and grant full equality to all its residents. The whole notion of voting on rights is preposterous, though. I don't vote on your right to hunt. Why do you get to vote on my right to marry?

Curiosity survives brain transplant, prepares for first drive

Curiosity survives 'brain transplant,' prepares for first drive

If you thought your OTA update took too long, how about four days? That's how long the Curiosity "brain transplant" took, and is now finally complete. This now means that the main computers have switched over from landing mode, to surface mode -- and thus we hope -- meaning the rover's good to go. That said, it's still a painfully slow process, with Curiosity's wheels likely remaining steadfastly motionless for at least another week -- and even then we're looking at a trip of just a few meters. When it comes to interplanetary travel, though, slow and steady definitely wins the race -- in the meantime, you can soak up the view.

Religion News Service | Culture | Social Issues | Poll: Religious ...

(RNS) After the movie theater massacre in Aurora, Colo., and a deadly shooting at a Sikh temple in Oak Creek, Wis., Americans are divided on gun control, and within certain religious groups, attitudes are far from ambivalent.

But on the question of guns in churches, there is actual consensus: A strong majority of Americans don?t want them in the pews, according to a new poll released Wednesday (Aug. 15) by the Public Religion Research Institute conducted in partnership with Religion News Service.

"Although the issue of gun control tends to divide Americans by party, gender, region and race, there is broad agreement among the public that there are some places where concealed weapons should be off limits," said Daniel Cox, PRRI?s research director.

More than three-quarters of respondents (76 percent) said concealed weapons should not be allowed in houses of worship, compared to 20 percent who disagreed.

The poll, conducted in the wake of the Colorado and Wisconsin shootings, shows that a slim majority (52 percent) of Americans favors passing stricter laws, while 44 percent are opposed.

But walk into a Catholic church or an evangelical congregation, and the worshippers may not be so torn about gun control.

Among white evangelicals, for instance, support for stricter gun control is weak, at 35 percent. That compares to the 62 percent of Catholics and 60 percent of unaffiliated Americans who would like to see tighter gun control laws on the books.

The Rev. James Martin, a Jesuit priest who called for tighter gun control after the movie theater massacre last month, offered several reasons why U.S. Catholics may be more likely to support it.

"Catholics may congregate more in urban centers and may be more exposed to violent crimes than people in other parts of he country,? said Martin, the author of ?The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything."

?And Catholics might be more sympathetic to government regulation, because the church has always seen legitimate government as one way of expressing the will of the people," Martin continued. What's more, he said, ?there might be a slightly greater appreciation for the notion of the common good, which is enshrined in Catholic social teaching, in addition to individual rights.?

Black Protestants favor stricter gun control even more strongly than Catholics, according to a 2011 ABC News/Washington Post poll, with 71 percent saying they want tougher gun laws.

As for white mainline Protestants, 42 percent endorse tighter gun control, according to the PRRI/RNS survey. This may be because most mainline Protestants (54 percent) live in a household with a gun, Cox said, and the survey found that those who don?t live with guns generally tend to favor more gun restrictions.

As Americans remain divided on gun control, they show no consensus when asked about the most effective way to prevent mass shootings. ?People are all over the map,? Cox said, noting that:

-- 27 percent of respondents said stricter gun control would help.
-- 22 percent cited better mental health screenings and support for those who want guns.
-- 20 percent argued for a greater emphasis on God and morality in school and society.
-- 14 percent want stricter security at public gatherings.
