Facebook, Twitter, And Social Media Marketing ... - Business Insider

Hear from Fortune 500 brands on measuring social media impact at "Social Media ROI," Business Insider's second-annual conference on top tactics for Facebook, YouTube, LinkedIn, Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr, Pinterest and more. September 27, 2012, in New York -- Reserve your ticket now.

Yesterday Orbitz CEO Barney Harford defended his company's targeted pricing -- offering Mac users more expensive hotel options than those offered to PC users -- by using Twitter to send out a clarification.?

As Harford's succinct response shows, social media has grown beyond a conversation tool to help companies manage crises, customer service, marketing, and market analysis.

Yet the question of how social media can contribute to a company's bottom line -- and whether Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, Instagram et. al. should even be considered in this light -- remains.

Where's the ROI in social media? Here are some of the latest trends:

  • Farewell, vanity metrics. Hello, engagement.

Firms are now ditching brags about how many followers and fans they have. Instead, they're pointing to specific campaigns run on social platforms and the value those campaigns created for users.

Take Orbitz. In 2009, Orbitz was trying to rack up followers by running ticket give-aways for users who agreed to follow and retweet messages from @Orbitz. There was no value accrued to the user just by participating, unless you count pride in repeating a corporate message from Orbitz's Twitter account. Instead, people were just hoping to win a ticket. A perhaps forgettable experience.

Fast forward to the holiday season in 2011, when the travel company launched "Gift it Forward," asking Facebook users to nominate a friend or loved one who had done a good deed to receive a free vacation. Simply by participating, fans got value: they got to tell someone they care about that this person deserves a nice vacation. Winning was just a bonus. And users were presumably left with a warm, fuzzy feeling about Orbitz.?

So how did that campaign contribute to ROI?

You can hear about successful social media campaigns at Business Insider's Social Media ROI conference, taking place September 27, 2012, in New York City.

Executives from Fortune 500 brands, technology companies, and emerging startups will tackle the question: "Where's the ROI in Social Media?" Register to attend now for the ultra-early bird rate.

Confirmed speakers include:

  • Scott Monty, Global Digital and Multimedia Communications Manager, Ford Motor Company
  • Carmen D'Ascendis, Director of Global Marketing, Jack Daniel's?
  • Dave Gilboa, Co-founder, Warby Parker
  • Kip Levin, EVP E-commerce, TicketMaster
  • And more to be announced! ?

Reserve your seat now for the early discount. Meanwhile, here are additional trends in social media marketing.

  • Farewell, engagement. Hello, ROI.

Engagement is all well and good, goes the thinking. But how do you track and measure its impact on sales?

For some marketers, this isn't the right question. They note that interactive marketing isn't a nice-to-have line item that needs to be justified into a global marketing budget; it's a need-to-have that keeps brands relevant in the always-on digital world. Social media shapes brand identity, helps brands learn from fans, and, in particular, enables a brand to build a relationship with a millennial consumer suspicious of slick, corporate "push" marketing and friendlier to authentic interaction.

But some brands have found a way to quantify their efforts.

TicketMaster rolled out a Facebook integration earlier this year that allows users to share their seats with friends. Each time a ticket purchaser clicks to share on Facebook, that click is worth $6-8 for TicketMaster in eventual ticket sales, their EVP of Ecommerce Kip Levin told Business Insider earlier this year.

That's huge -- as much as clicks from Google's direct-search traffic are worth. And what's more, TicketMaster isn't paying Facebook for the traffic. The integration isn't an advertising campaign; it's just a clever app.

You can hear from Levin directly at Social Media ROI in September.

And in cases where it's tougher for brands to measure revenue from social efforts, an entire ecosystem of technology service providers has arisen to tackle the challenge. The September conference will feature presentations and demos from firms trying to crack the ROI code.

  • Beware the bright, shiny object

This is a mantra brand marketers are repeating these days, warning peers: don't run to a new platform like Pinterest because you read about its incredible growth. Instead, figure out your marketing and communications strategy. Then pick the platform that integrates well with that strategy.

So who's doing this well? Which brands have a savvy strategy that incorporates Instagram, Tumblr, Google+, LinkedIn, and the many other social media available?

Find out at Social Media ROI in September. Here's who should attend:

  • Marketers who want to put metrics behind their Twitter, Facebook and other social efforts
  • Publishers interested in learning how to maximize their social efforts
  • Consultants and agencies who want to offer their clients a clear ROI picture
  • Investors in social-media analytics companies who need to stay abreast of market trends and needs

Meanwhile, you can follow @BI_Events on Twitter for further discounts and updates. See you in September.

Court bars mandatory life without parole for kids

Alito, and Elena Kagan inside Supreme Court in Washington, Monday, June 25, 2012. (AP Photo/Dana Verkouteren)

(AP) ? The Supreme Court on Monday threw out mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. The ruling continued its trend of holding that children cannot be automatically punished the same way as criminal adults without considering their age and other factors.

The 5-4 decision split along ideological lines: The court's four liberals and swing vote Justice Anthony Kennedy joined to order states and the federal government to allow judges and juries to consider a juvenile's age when they hand down sentences for some of the harshest crimes, instead of making life in prison without parole automatic.

By making youth "irrelevant to imposition of that harshest prison sentence, such a scheme poses too great a risk of disproportionate punishment," wrote Justice Elena Kagan, who was joined in the majority opinion by Kennedy and Justices Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Stephen Breyer and Sonia Sotomayor.

Monday's decision left open the possibility that individual judges could sentence juveniles to life without parole in individual cases of murder, but said state and federal laws cannot automatically impose such a sentence.

This decision is in line with others the court has made, including ruling out the death penalty for juveniles and life without parole for young people whose crimes did not involve killing.

Dissenting, the court's four conservatives said nothing in the Constitution forbids laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles. Chief Justice John Roberts was joined in the main dissent by Justices Antonin Scalia, Clarence Thomas and Samuel Alito. Alito also wrote separately and read his dissent aloud in the courtroom.

Under the majority opinion, Alito said, "Even a 17?-year-old who sets off a bomb in crowded mall or guns down a dozen students and teachers is a 'child' and must be given a chance to persuade a judge to permit his release into society. Nothing in the Constitution supports this arrogation of legislative authority."

Twenty-six states and the federal government have made life in prison without parole mandatory for some types of murder and allowed it to be applied to 14-year-olds, court papers said. In addition, Louisiana has some mandatory life without parole sentences for 15-year-olds, and Texas has some for 17-year-olds.

The decision came in the robbery and murder cases of Evan Miller and Kuntrell Jackson, who were 14 when they were convicted and sentenced to life without parole.

Jackson was sentenced in Arkansas after the shooting death of a store clerk during an attempted robbery in 1999. Another boy shot the clerk, but because Jackson was present he was convicted of capital murder and aggravated robbery.

Using his case, Breyer and Sotomayor said in a separate opinion they would have gone even further than just getting rid of laws requiring mandatory life in prison without parole for juveniles like Jackson. "There is no basis for imposing a sentence of life without parole upon a juvenile who did not himself kill or intend to kill," Breyer said in a separate opinion.

Miller was convicted in Alabama of capital murder during the course of arson. A neighbor, while doing drugs and drinking with Miller and a 16-year-old boy, attacked Miller. Intoxicated, Miller and his friend beat the 52-year-old man and set fire to his home, killing him.

Monday's high court ruling "is an important win for children," said Bryan Stevenson, executive director of the Equal Justice Initiative, who represented Jackson and Miller. "The court took a significant step forward by recognizing the fundamental unfairness of mandatory death-in-prison sentences that don't allow sentencers to consider the unique status of children and their potential for change. The court has recognized that children need additional attention and protection in the criminal justice system."

Alabama Attorney General Luther Strange expressed disappointment with the decision. "It is rare that a juvenile commits the worst kind of murder. But when this happens, the Alabama Legislature and most other American legislatures have determined that the appropriate sentence is life without parole. And they have made that sentence mandatory. Thus, it is hard to understand the Court's ruling that this sentencing procedure is 'unusual' for the purposes of the Eighth Amendment," he said.

The court's ruling was based on the Constitution's Eighth Amendment prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment.

Strange said he didn't expect the ruling to be applied retroactively to others whose sentences are already final. And while Miller will get another sentencing hearing, "the prosecution will have a compelling argument that he should receive a life-without-parole sentence," he said.

In Arkansas, prosecutor Scott Ellington said he expected the state Supreme Court to notify prosecutors, lawyers for Jackson and any others affected by the ruling to tell them what happens next. "The speculation is that those cases that are affected in this case will have to have a new sentencing hearing," Ellington said.

According to data provided to the court, roughly 2,500 people are behind bars for life with no chance of winning their freedom for murders they committed before their 18th birthday. More than 2,000 of them were there because the sentence was mandated by a legislature.

Advocates say 79 of them are in prison for crimes that took place when they were 14 or younger.

The cases were Miller v. Alabama, 10-9646 and Jackson v. Hobbs, 10-9647.

FOOTBALL: Rams solid in Charlotte

CHARLOTTE ? A few Havelock football players and coaches took a trip to Charlotte Tuesday to compete in a 7-on-7 passing league contest that featured some top schools from North Carolina and South Carolina.

The games were played at?the practice facility?of the Carolina Panthers.

The Rams went 2-2 to qualify for the eight-team championship round.

Havelock fell 14-7 to Orangeburg Wilkinson, of S.C., in its first game of the title bracket.

?I felt like the guys played well, our work ethic, speed and agility and conditioning were all very solid and that?s very good to see,? Havelock coach Jim Bob Bryant said. ?We saw some good things and sured up our route-running very nicely, I thought.?

Havelock star Pharoh Cooper has done just about everything in his three-year career for the Rams except throw the football.

That will change this year as he is assuming the quarterback role left vacant by the graduation of Garrett Crowe.

?I thought Pharoh threw the ball really well,? Bryant said. ?For a guy who hasn?t played quarterback, except for the one week of practice that we?ve had, he made some good throws and competed well.?

The Rams went undefeated against schools from North Carolina, but were 0-3 against schools from South Carolina.

They defeated Northern Guilford, 30-7; lost to Bluffton High, 14-17; lost to Spartanburg High, 14-17; and defeated Cox Mill 24-7.

One very special onlooker of the Rams Tuesday, was Heisman Trophy winner and Panthers' QB Cam Newton.

Newton spoke to the kids and watched some of the games for a few hours, and even high-fived and chestbumped some of the Rams.

While the Charlotte passing league was a great early test for the Rams, the offseason has just begun.

The Rams have a weekly workout schedule of Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday morning sessions and are competing in a passing league on Wednesday nights.

?I think everything is going about as smoothly as we could hope for,? Bryant said. ?No one has missed a workout and all of the kids hold each other accountable in case one of them does miss one.?

Another factoid about the 7-on-7 camp was that it was strictly passing and defense with no running.

With a running back the caliber of Havelock?s Derrell Scott, that aspect of the game figures to be a key component of the Rams? success this season.

One of Havelock?s featured receivers, A.J. Coplon, is nursing a hand injury and wasn?t able to play receiver at the 7-on-7 camp.

?We have a few guys (that need) to get healthy and all, but we are doing another passing league with North Pitt High School, once at our place and once at theirs, so there?s still a lot more to do,? Bryant said.

One thing is for sure ? with an abundance of talent and solid infrastructure of players and coaches ? Havelock will be a formidable opponent for any team.

Axio's EEG headband helps you teach your brain to focus (hands-on)

Axio's EEG headband helps you teach your brain to focus handson

Usually when an EEG sensor headset graces these pages, it's used to peer into your thoughts or grant the wearer the power to control other gadgets with his or her mind. While such uses have appeal, start-up company Axio has a new EEG headband that aims to help you learn to better control your own brain. It tracks your level of mental focus in real-time and provides positive reinforcement audio feedback when you're mentally locked in. The neoprene band packs a trio of electrodes, a PCB with a Bluetooth radio and audio out, and a battery pack to power everything. It works by identifying the brainwave readings that correlate to ideal executive function in your pre-frontal cortex and shooting that data to your computer or phone via Bluetooth. Axio's software then shows an onscreen graph that charts your focus level in real-time, and for folks who prefer a more literal tracking method, there's a photo above the chart that moves in and out of focus along with your mind. Additionally, the headband provides pleasing audio neurofeedback when you're focused in order to train you to stay mentally engaged.

Unfortunately, we couldn't get much more information about the neurofeedback functionality, as the technology behind it is the company's secret sauce, and it won't divulge more until it's got the cash to bring the band to market. We also weren't able to actually test the band to see how it works, as it's still in the prototype phase and there's still a kink or two left to work out. Axio did tell us that the prototype we got our mitts on was the result of just six short months of work, and that after hacking together the original design using Arduino, the current iteration has a custom PCB better suited to Axio's needs. Co-founder Arye Barnehama also informed us that the band should be on sale by the end of summer, though he wouldn't say for how much or where we'll be able to pick one up. Sometime after it hits store shelves, Axio plans to release an SDK so that enterprising devs can make their own focus-aiding software and implement whatever audio feedback they prefer to help them take care of business -- a dose of Bachman-Turner Overdrive ought to do the trick.

China promises Taiwan investors bank loans

(AP) ? China has promised Taiwanese investors up to $95 billion in loans from state banks as it tries to build closer ties with the self-ruled island that Beijing claims as its own territory.

The director of the Cabinet's Taiwan Affairs Office made the announcement at a weekend forum on mainland-Taiwan relations, according to the official Xinhua News Agency.

The two sides separated in 1949 amid civil war and have no official ties but are rapidly building commercial relations. The communist mainland has announced a series of concessions in recent years to Taiwanese companies and farmers in an effort to build public support on the island for eventual unification.

Four state banks will offer credit totaling 600 billion yuan ($95 billion) to Taiwanese-invested mainland businesses, the official, Wang Yi, was cited as saying at the forum in the southeastern port of Xiamen, which faces Taiwan.

The pledge comes amid a mini-stimulus launched by Beijing to reverse an economic slump with more spending on building airports and other public works and promises of more bank loans to private companies to generate jobs.

The mainland is Taiwan's biggest trading partner. The island exported goods worth a total of $124 billion to China last year. Taiwanese companies have invested $130 billion in China over the past two decades and much of the island's labor-intensive manufacturing has shifted to the mainland, where wages are lower.

China is increasingly important to Taiwan as a market as global demand for the island's exports weakens. Mainland Chinese investment in Taiwan totaled only $132 million as of last year, due partly to restrictions imposed by the island's government to avoid being dominated by its giant neighbor.

Taiwanese President Ma Ying-jeou, who was re-elected in January, has pursued amicable relations with Beijing. The mainland's President Hu Jintao has tried to woo Taiwanese by showing the economic benefits of closer ties.

Still, polls in Taiwan indicate no more than 10 percent of its people want political integration with the mainland, while 60 to 70 percent favor the status quo. The rest support formal independence, a step that China says would lead to war.

Wang, the Cabinet official, also said Beijing will ease controls on mainland access for Taiwanese and expand rice imports from Taiwan and outbound mainland tourism to the island, according to Xinhua.

The validity of mainland entry permits for Taiwanese will be extended to two years from one, Xinhua said. It said the number of cities where Taiwanese arriving by air can apply for the permit will be expanded to 31 from 28.

A program that allows residents of nine cities in China's southeast to visit Taiwan's outlying islands of Kinmen, Matsu and Penghu will be expanded to 11 additional cities, Wang was cited as saying.

Mainland tourism authorities have set a target of 1.8 million Taiwan-bound tourists this year, according to Xinhua.

Also, the mainland's National Natural Science Foundation of China will launch a fund with an annual budget of 30 million yuan ($4.7 million) to pay for research by scientists across the strait, the report said.

Nantsune meat slicer scans 3D shapes to get the perfect cut, bring home the bacon in record time video

Bacon, our old friend. We've missed you. Japan's Nantsune must have missed it too, as its new Libra 165C meat slicer is using some mighty advanced technology to cut pork quickly. Beating a Nikko creation to the punch by about a year, it uses a displacement sensor to scan the shape of a slab of meat and make cuts that are the exact same weight, regardless of their shape or thickness. By knowing as much as it does in advance, the Libra can cut as many as 6,000 slices every hour; they're not ready-made bacon slices, but they'll certainly get to those cuts much faster than earlier methods that only weighed in mid-chop. You might not want to get visions of setting up Nantsune's meat machine in the kitchen: it'll be ready by the end of June, but the $160,000 price could mean sacrificing a whole lot of other food to avoid breaking out the cleaver.

Sonics fans watch NBA Finals with bitterness

All of the TVs at Oskar's Kitchen were tuned to the NBA Finals pregame show.

It was a few minutes after 5:30 p.m., and many of the city's Sonics fans were still celebrating what was and mourning what wasn't ? hoping during an arena rally at Occidental Park that the NBA might one day come back.

The speakers in Shawn Kemp's bar echoed with the voices of Magic Johnson, Michael Wilbon and Jon Barry, who were breaking down what to expect in Game 2 between Oklahoma City and Miami.

The first green shirts trickled into the bar shortly after 6.

A pair of Sonics fans grabbed a high-top table in the corner. One of them said, "Go, Heat." His friend replied, "I don't want anyone to win."

When Miami forward Shane Battier drained a first-quarter three-pointer to put the Heat up 16-2, someone else shouted "Go, Heat."

Eric Wilkins, who grew up rooting for the Sonics, was eating a pita pizza and a salad. Wilkins had been at the rally and decided to stop by Oskar's for dinner.

"This is the most NBA basketball I've seen since (the Sonics left)," said Wilkins, who still remembers watching at his grandmother's house as the Sonics won the 1979 championship.

Throughout the game, fans wearing Sonics gear filtered in and out of the restaurant. One woman was wearing a yellow shirt with Oklahoma City owner Clay Bennett's face on the front. There was a screw poking out of his head.

Early in the third quarter, someone shouted, "Let's go, Heat!" He tried to start a chant. Then he apologized.

"Sorry," he said. "Bitter Sonics fan."

Kris Humphries Accuses Myla Sinanaj of Running Personal NYC Brothel

Dear Kris Humphries: Please stop it. You're starting to make Kim Kardashian look good.

In the latest bizarre twist to the relationship between this NBA power forward and Myla Sinanaj, Humphries has allegedly accused his ex-girlfriend of running a personal brothel out of the New York City hotel where they met.

Really!

K. Humphries

Joe Tacopina - Sinanaj's attorney - tells TMZ that Humphries and his legal team are determined to hide the fact that Kris and Myla dated for five months because it would damage their divorce case against Kardashian, as they attempt to milk her for as much money as possible and it would look bad if a supposedly heartbroken Humphries moved on as early as January.

Therefore, in an attempt to destroy Sinanaj's credibility, a lawyer for Humphries actually phoned the hotel at which Myla works and tried to get her fired… but alleging she was sleeping with guests there for money!

Management reportedly looked into this claim and quickly dismissed it.

Now, Tacopina says he's close to filing a defamation suit against Humphries and the baller better apologize ASAP, recanting all slanderous accusations against his client... or else.

But the odds of this happening are apparently as strong as the odds of Kim Kardashian winning an Academy Awards.

"He will not be apologizing," says a source.

Drivers hit 218 mph on Michigan frontstretch Thursday - NASCAR News | FOX Sports on MSN

Updated?Jun 14, 2012 3:00 PM ET

?

BROOKLYN, Mich.

How fast is too fast?

Mark Martin topped the speed chart on the newly repaved Michigan Speedway with a lap of 201.089 mph in NASCAR Sprint Cup testing Thursday. But down the frontstretch, drivers were reaching 218 mph entering the corner. That?s five miles per hour faster than drivers were running last week at Pocono Raceway.

While NASCAR Vice President of Competition Robin Pemberton said the sanctioning body did not expect to add a restrictor plate to slow the speeds as he expects they will go down over time, drivers did seem a little surprised by them.

Greg Biffle, who posted a lap of 199.253, doesn?t feel that the speeds are outrageous. The former points leader - Biffle dropped from first to third in the standings after engine issues at Pocono - believes ?a little action and controversy? is good for the sport. And recently, fans have questioned whether with all the safety innovations NASCAR has become a bit stale.

?Yeah, but we don?t want to kill anybody either.? Biffle said. ?We have to walk that fine line of not killing people and creating excitement. I think the biggest thing is that when people say that it is too fast or whatever ... that it makes it hard to race other cars at that speed. You look at the places we go, the absolute fastest, and sometimes those aren?t the best races to watch. Sometimes the tracks that are a little bit slower put on a little better side-by-side action and more bumping and grinding. I promise you that you aren?t going to bump somebody at 218 mph, I promise you that. It isn?t going to happen.

?Saying that, just because we are going that fast doesn?t mean it is going to be a great race. Just because the speeds are the thrill or excitement. TV tames it down a lot. Watching in the grandstands here and watching on TV at home is a lot different. It numbs you from that speed. High speed doesn?t always mean exciting racing. Sometimes a little slower speed actually could be a little more exciting and thrilling. You are seeing guys root and gouge and go.?

Still, he recognizes all the issues high speeds can raise.

?I have to admit that if I was on the other side of the game I would be a little bit nervous right now with the 218,? he said. ?Like you said, it is kind of late in the game. Who knew what it would do, that is the biggest unknown. We know it slows the car down a little bit but where do you start? Are these engines capable? That is a lot of unknowns.?

NASCAR, though, appears comfortable with the results as of now. During the first day of testing on the 2-mile track, 39 cars were over the qualifying record of 194.232 mph set by Ryan Newman in August 2005. However, the cars were running in race trim ? not qualifying trim. Asked if there was a speed that could generate lift off and get the sanctioning body?s attention, NASCAR Sprint Cup Director John Darby replied that, ?Yes there is, and no we?re not there yet.?

Drivers say that it is the handling of the car as much as anything that makes the higher speeds feel significant.

?It?s pretty fast,? said Clint Bowyer, whose best lap was 199.418 mph. ?Center corner speed is fast. It doesn?t feel any different down the straightaway if your car is handling good. At the start of practice I was a second off and it felt really, really fast.
