Russia condemns ally Syria over massacre of 108

BEIRUT (AP) ? A weekend massacre of more than 100 people emerged as a potential turning point in the Syrian crisis Monday, galvanizing even staunch ally Russia to take an unusually hard line against President Bashar Assad's government.

Analysts said Russia may be warning Assad that he needs to change course or lose Moscow's support, which has been a key layer of protection for the Syrian government during the uprising that began in March 2011.

Russia has grown increasingly critical of Damascus in recent months, but Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov's latest comments were unusually strong. Although he said opposition forces have terrorists among them, he put the blame for 15 months of carnage primarily on Assad's government.

"The government bears the main responsibility for what is going on," Lavrov said in Moscow following a meeting with British Foreign Secretary William Hague. "Any government in any country bears responsibility for the security of its citizens."

Alexei Malashenko, a Middle East expert with the Carnegie Moscow Center, said Lavrov's comments suggest Russia may be backing away from its long-standing support for Damascus.

"Bashar Assad is driving himself and Russia into a corner," Malashenko said. "Bashar has definitely gotten the sense that he may lose Russia's sympathy, and he may step back a bit."

It is not clear whether Assad's forces were exclusively to blame for the slaughter of 108 people Friday in Houla, a collection of poor farming villages in Homs province. The United Nations said 49 children and 34 women were among the dead; some had bullet holes through their heads.

The U.N. Security Council blamed Syrian forces for artillery and tank shelling of residential areas, but it did not clearly state who was responsible for the close-range shooting deaths and "severe physical abuse" of civilians.

Activists from the area said the army pounded the villages with artillery and clashed with local rebels. They said pro-government gunmen later stormed the area, doing the bulk of the killing by gunning down men in the streets and stabbing women and children in their homes.

The Syrian government rejected that account entirely, saying soldiers were attacked in their bases and fought back in self-defense without leaving their bases.

Russia blamed both the government and the rebels for the Houla massacre.

"Both sides have obviously had a hand in the deaths of innocent people, including several dozen women and children," Lavrov said. "This area is controlled by the rebels, but it is also surrounded by the government troops."

He said Russia has no interest in propping up Assad but wants Syria to guide its own transition under a plan brokered by special envoy Kofi Annan.

"We don't support the Syrian government; we support Kofi Annan's plan," Lavrov said.

Moscow's pro-Syria stance has been motivated in part by its strategic and defense ties to Damascus, including weapons sales. Russia also rejects what it sees as a world order dominated by the U.S.

Losing Russian support could be disastrous for Assad because his crackdown has left him almost completely isolated internationally. Russia and China have stood by him so far, using their veto power to block U.N. resolutions against him.

Hilal Khashan, a political science professor at the American University of Beirut, said the Houla massacre appears to be ushering in a change in Russia's position.

"There is a shift and the momentum against the regime is gathering," Khashan said. "The momentum is building and the Russians are not blocking the rising momentum."

The Syrian conflict is among the most explosive of the Arab Spring, in part because of Syria's allegiances to powerful forces, including Lebanon's Hezbollah and Shiite powerhouse Iran.

Activists say as many as 12,000 people have been killed since the uprising began. The U.N. put the toll as of March, a year into the uprising, at 9,000, but many hundreds more have died since.

Annan's peace plan, which calls for a cease-fire and dialogue, has been faltering for weeks. But Western leaders have pinned their hopes on his diplomatic pressure, since the U.S. and others are unwilling to get deeply involved in another Arab nation in turmoil.

Annan arrived in Damascus on Monday for talks with Assad and other officials and called on "every individual with a gun" in Syria to lay down arms, saying he was horrified by the Houla massacre.

Britain's Prime Minister David Cameron and French President Francois Holland spoke on the phone and expressed their desire to work with Russia to resolve the crisis in Syria. A British spokeswoman said Cameron and Hollande agreed to act together to "bring an end to the bloody suppression of the Syrian people."

Activists reported fresh violence Monday, saying troops shelled several neighborhoods in Hama, killing at least 24 people.

More than 15,000 fans are expected to file into the MGM Grand this Saturday night to watch Junior dos Santos defend his divisional title against Frank Mir in the main event at UFC 146. While the bulk of them will be rooting one way or another come showtime none will be as loud in their support of the champion as nine-year old Breno Luis Ferreira.

Fans may remember Ferreira from last week?s episode of UFC Primetime when he asked Dos Santos if he could go with him to Las Vegas for the fight. At the time ?Cigano? indulged the child?s interest by saying it was a possibility, though in reality it seemed unlikely anything would come from the exchange other than a nice moment in front of the cameras.

However, as it turns out Dos Santos did in fact fly Ferreira to Vegas along with his mother and teenage brother to take part in the process while simultaneously fulfilling the wish of an impoverished child and showing him good things happen to good people who dedicate themselves to positive endeavors.

?He didn?t have a passport, his mother didn?t have a passport but I was a little guy once and people helped me. If we could make the little guy?s dream come true, if we were able somehow, why wouldn?t we,? asked Dos Santos rhetorically in a UFC video documenting the process. ?At this point in my career, I can be a motivation and role model for these little guys from home. The kids see that all the fighters from the gym have good cars; they can see that hard work does lead to something good in life.?

Based on some comments it appears Ferreira has certainly enjoyed the experience thus far with his assessment of the situation likely warming even the coldest heart.

?It?s just so exciting being here in Las Vegas. Even to get to sit on an airplane was like a dream. I could see all things out of the window, big buildings and we were really high above them, flying like a dream. Our room here is so nice and everyone is being so nice to me, but I?m here to help Cigano defend his title,? explained Ferreira after referring to his hotel room being as large as his house in Salvador, Brazil. ??Cigano? is the strongest man in the world. He can defeat anybody even though he is nice. He will beat Frank Mir on Saturday. I?ve seen him in the gym and he will win with a left hook followed by a big right uppercut. This will be in the first round.?

Dos Santos will enter the Octagon as champion with status as the #1 heavyweight in the sport. Whether he exits it with the same two distinctions in tow remains to be seen. Still, it is clear that in the eyes of one lucky boy the label placed on the 27-year old title-holder will not change regardless of what happens once the cage door closes ? that of hero.

A team from the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO) has developed a technique to measure internal cell temperatures without altering their metabolism. This finding could be useful when distinguishing healthy cells from cancerous ones, as well as learning more about cellular processes.

Temperature controls many of the cell's life processes, such as splitting and metabolism. A European research team led by the Institute of Photonic Sciences (ICFO), which has the Severo Ochoa mark of excellence, has published a non-invasive method that offers quicker, more precise data from measuring intracellular heat from green fluorescent proteins (GFP) in the journal 'Nano Letters'.

"A unique characteristic of our method is that it does not alter any cellular process" Romain Quidant, ICFO researcher and study coordinator, explains. Unlike other techniques, this method does not stress or alter the behaviour of the cell as it does not need to be inserted into any molecules or any other synthetic nano-object that is sensitive to the internal temperature.

One of the most promising outcomes is a better understanding of cellular processes, such as those involved in metastasis. Furthermore, the possibility of obtaining information about intracellular temperature could be used to "differentiate normal cells from cancerous ones in a quick, non-invasive manner" Sebastian Thompson Parga, ICFO researcher and co-author of the project.

Information deduced from temperature

From intracellular temperature, we can deduce how the energy used by the body in the uncontrolled spreading of cancer cells flows.

In this interdisciplinary study, biology uses physical measurements of energy transmission to study processes such as gene expression, metabolism and cell splitting.

The technique used is known by the name of 'fluorescence polarisation anisotropy' (FPA) as it allows the difference in polarization between light that fluorescent molecules receive, and that which they emit later, to be measured. In the words of Quidant, "this difference in polarization (anisotropy) is directly connected to the rotating of the GFP molecules and therefore with temperature".

The green fluorescence of the proteins has a reward

The authors of the study ensure that biologists will be able to implement this technique in experimental set-ups and obtain the cell temperature as another observable detail. In 2008, when Osamu Shimomura, Martin Chalfie and Roger Y. Tsien won the Nobel Chemistry Prize for discovering and developing GFP, they resolved many complications in biomedical research.

In the field of molecular biology, different techniques have been suggested to monitor internal cell temperature, these researchers found limitations in measuring the intensity and spectrum of its fluorescence.

Furthermore, the option of measuring intracellular activity could establish the basis to develop a field that has not been widely studied: thermal biology at cellular level.

According to the authors of the study, the following step is to improve the method's sensitivity and resolution. In order to achieve that, the researchers work to fine tune the properties of the fluorescent proteins and optimise the detection method of its 'thermometer'.

Student Loan Vote: Senate Rejects Democratic, GOP Plans To Extend Current Interest Rates

WASHINGTON ? The Senate rejected dueling Democratic and Republican plans on Thursday for averting a July 1 doubling of interest rates on federal college loans for 7.4 million students, pushing back efforts to resolve the election-season showdown until next month.

In mostly party-line roll calls, senators voted 62-34 against the GOP package and 51-43 for the Democratic version, with each falling short of the 60 votes needed for approval. Though both defeats were preordained, the twin votes gave lawmakers from each party a chance to show they favor easing students' financial burdens ? and potential grist for campaign ads accusing the other side of opposing the effort.

The Senate planned to leave town later Thursday for a Memorial Day recess running through next week. Neither party wants to be accused of letting the interest rates grow at a time when voters are focused on coping in today's rough-edged economy, giving each side an incentive to eventually strike a compromise.

A 2007 law gradually reduced interest rates on subsidized Stafford loans for low- and middle-income undergraduates to 3.4 percent. To save money, it mandated that rates return to 6.8 percent for new loans as of July 1.

President Barack Obama has made preventing a rate increase a priority and has appeared at colleges and on television talk shows to promote it. Though some Republicans expressed early concerns that retaining the lower rate would fuel college tuition increases, likely GOP presidential candidate Mitt Romney endorsed freezing the rate and most GOP lawmakers have done the same.

Ten conservative GOP senators opposed their own party's proposal, with some expressing concerns about budget costs and saying the loan market should set its own prices.

Both measures rejected Thursday would delay the interest rate increase for a year at a cost of $6 billion, but each side's bill was paid for in a way the other couldn't tolerate. Democrats proposed raising Social Security and Medicare payroll taxes on high-earning owners of some privately held companies and professional practices, while Republicans would abolish an Obama preventive health program.

That idea drew a White House veto threat when Republicans used it to pay for their House-passed bill in April.

"The Republican proposal is paid for by stripping Americans of lifesaving preventive health care," said Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid of Nevada, adding, "It would be a shame" to do that.

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell of Kentucky argued that the Democratic plan showed they wanted "a scapegoat more than a solution" because they knew Republicans would oppose its tax provision.

He also tried goading Obama, saying, "If the president's got time to run around to late-night comedy shows and college campuses talking about this issue, then he can pick up the phone and work out a solution."

The Education Department expects 7.4 million undergraduates to borrow subsidized Stafford loans next year averaging $4,226. Doubled interest rates would add around $1,000 in costs, which for the typical loan taking 12 years to repay would mean less than $10 monthly in added expense.

The Federal Reserve Bank of New York estimates that at least 37 million Americans owe $870 billion for outstanding student loans, a figure that is growing and that exceeds the money owed for credit cards or auto loans. Four in 10 people under age 40 owe money for a college loan, the bank says.

The human lifestyle is greatly impacted by the advances in internet technologies. Every day we become more and more dependent on it.? It provides effective means for virtual communication, online banking, shopping, e-learning and many more. But to enjoy the benefits of web technologies, we first need to make sure that these means are secure.

Security testing services plays a vital role in software industry. It is an approach to determine whether our confidential data on web is secure from unauthorized access or not.? Basically, it is a process to identify the vulnerabilities of web application caused due to improper coding & designing of an application. Vulnerabilities allow hackers to retrieve confidential information from network. Security testing services identifies holes in the software, and thus, improves the system stability.?

Before releasing a web application, the main purpose of security testing is to discover all vulnerabilities.

But it is not possible to check each and every line of code to detect weaknesses in an application. The strategy should be such that testing saves time, effort and should start in the earlier phase of designing. Also consider all possible events that can occur and the risk associated with these events.

Some common vulnerability attacks are authentication, session management, SQL injection and error handling. Authentication attacks occur on a website if users are allowed to login with a weak password which is easily guessed by an attacker. Therefore, password should be a combination of uppercase, lowercase and special characters of required length.

Nowadays, most websites lock the user id if multiple passwords are hit from the same IP, but then hackers have found alternative ways to breach this. Multiple passwords can be used for the same user id by changing the IP every time the password has been hit. This can be done by using proxies. There are many tools available online which provide working proxies. Once a list of multiple proxies is available, hackers just need a script which will hit the list of possible passwords for the same id by generating different proxies.

Another orthodox method commonly used for breaking authentication is by creating a fake page. A fake page is a replica of the original login page of the website. These types of pages can be sent through emails to the victim. Once the victim opens the page and enters his/her credentials, they become available to the hacker who has created this page.

Session management is maintaining the user identity across multiple requests. Insufficient session expiration allows the attacker to retrieve old session ids, so he can reuse it.? For example, test scenario for application page ? make sure that application session is expired or application logs off after a specific time, multiple sessions by same user are not allowed, and also ensure that confidential data is transferred using HTTPS protocols. Attackers can access resources by adding SQL (Structured Query Language) codes into input box of a web form and generate SQL query dynamically to retrieve data. The risk of SQL injection attack rises due to use of automated tools on websites. The test needs to be executed to verify inputs without allowing special characters and check that no dynamic SQL queries are used. Information can be disclosed due to improper error handling; hence the test needs to be carried out on server to validate the access control mechanism; and also check the input URL and to verify that an error message does not retrieve too much information.

To secure web application from various attacks, a tester needs to think from an attacker?s point of view, understand what an attacker is looking for in web application and how to address these vulnerability attacks. Black box security testing can be performed more effectively by using various tools which are available in market, like Paros, Tamper IE and web scrap. A tester needs to work with his developer to identify and analyze threats specific to their product and then start working on a plan to test for them.

Paper Art is the exact opposite of the digital media although the times that paper was the primary medium for artistic expression is long gone. In this weekend?s article we are showcasing the mind blowing paper art portfolio ofZim & Zou?which is a graphic design studio located from France. Washington Post Project:?The story is about an area in the Washington DC suburbs, that is mainly offices, shopping and parking lots with tons and tons of cars. 4 metro stations will open out there. This car driven area will suddenly have more public transit. Right now it?s kind of a soulless place, but they?re hoping to make it more of a city. Hoping to add more pedestrian walkways, more apartments, more grocery stores ? more of a place that people want to live, rather than just work.
