Angel Raich is busy dying. The famous marijuana activist -- who took the federal government to the Supreme Court of the United States for the right to use medical cannabis -- was, earlier this year diagnosed with an inoperable terminal brain tumor, a condition that causes frequent seizures as well as constant pain and headaches.
Told by her doctors at the University of California-San Francisco that she should prepare to die, that's what Raich, 46, is doing, one day at a time -- with purpose as well as dignity.
Except for Monday night, when she was summarily removed from the hospital at UCSF's Parnassus campus for using marijuana, according to NBC Bay Area -- which showed up for an interview that was cut short when Raich had a seizure and had to be rushed to a (different) hospital.

Raich has lived with her brain tumor for some time, but earlier this year she was diagnosed with radiation necrosis, a complication from radiotherapy.
Details are scant, but it appears Raich was at UCSF for tests and was using marijuana via a vaporizer at the Parnassus campus when someone -- a doctor or a pharmacist -- took offense, and told Raich that they'd "call the Feds" unless she stopped using marijuana.
"The pharmacist said, you can't use cannabis in this hospital," Raich told the television station. "That's a death sentence."
Berkeley-based Dr. Frank Lucido, Raich's primary care physician, says that Raich needs to use marijuana every two waking hours, and denying her the drug amounts to "malpractice," according to a statement on Raich's website. "Angel will suffer imminent harm without access to cannabis."
Television viewers saw exactly what Lucido is talking about, as Raich suffered a seizure during her brief interview with NBC. Raich was then taken to St. Mary's Hospital on Stanyan Street, according to NBC.
In a statement, UCSF said that their hospital is "a smoke-free campus and this includes medical marijuana."
"Any particles from vapor and odor could have an impact on other patients and hospital employees," the statement read. "Under federal and state law, a physician is at legal risk related to any activity that could be construed as prescribing medical marijuana to a patient."
Raich gained national fame as the medical marijuana patient who took the federal government to the United States Supreme Court for the right to use medical marijuana. Her husband at the time, Oakland-based attorney Robert Raich, was one of the attorneys who argued that state law should supplant federal law, and that seriously ill Californians such as Raich have rights under the Constitution to use marijuana for medical purposes.
The Rehnquist Court disagreed, with the majority saying that the Commerce Clause gives Congress the right to ban marijuana for medical use, state law be damned. Justices Sandra Day O'Connor and Clarence Thomas joined Rehnquist, who died later that year, in supporting Raich.
Raich sued the government after DEA agents raided in 2002 a Butte County residence that housed six pot plants that provided Raich with her medicine.
It's worth mentioning that Raich is currently involved in yet another Supreme Court case, though not one you might expect. Raich filed an amicus brief in support of the lawsuit filed by the state of Florida which seeks to overturn Obamacare. Oral arguments in that case, Florida v. United States Department of Health and Human Services, are scheduled to begin later this month.
Details on Raich's current condition, and exactly what happened at UCSF were not available as of Tuesday. We'll update this post as soon as we know more.

The primary responsibility of a journalist is to capture and report the complete story. To make sure they achieve this, they rely on a basic concept most commonly referred to as The Five Ws (and one H). By adopting and implementing this simple concept you can set the context to begin coaching yourself through practically any situation.
It is important to note that these are questions that cannot be answered with a ?yes? or ?no? response. This leads to deeper reflection and furthering the conversation. With this framework in place, you should be well positioned to coach yourself through your issue and/or better prepared to discuss the issue in further detail with your coach.

Breast cancer is the most frequent female cancer in the world. The approach of prognostic diagnosis of breast cancer has been studied for a long time. Urinary nucleosides were recently presented as potential tumor markers for breast cancer by many groups.Urinary nucleosides were usually analyzed using phenylboronate affinity gel chromatography and HPLC or CE. Several kinds of pattern recognizing technique had been used to study prognostic diagnosis of breast cancer using urinary nucleosides. The result indicated these approaches have some disadvantages and need some improvement.In this thesis, we studied computational analysis approach to breast cancer metabonomics. Some key problems in analysis of urinary nucleosides and diagnosis of breast have been solved.This thesis includes three parts:(1) A novel method to establish calibration model of electrophoretic mobilities in capillary zone electorphresis using support vector regression (SVR) is proposed. Nucleotide was studied as an example and orthogonal design was applied to arrange the experiments. Support vector regression was used to establish calibration models to predict the electrophoretic mobilities of nucleotide from separation conditions of capillary zone electorphresis, i. e. column temperature, voltage, buffer concentration and pH. The results showed that the predictive accuracy of calibration models established by SVR was much better than that of the models by PLSR and ANN.(2) A novel approach of improved repeatablity of CZE using sudden change in electric current has been used with the advantages of needing no markers and easy to be integrated in the software of CE.(3) A new approach for diagnose breast cancer using nucleosides in urine based on metabonomics has been proposed. Four key components wereselected as characteristic pattern with certain feature selection method from the experimental data obtained by high performance liquid chromatography method. These four key components were analyzed with HPLC-MS/MS. BP-ANN has been used as pattern recognition tool to classify the samples form healthy persons and patients. The sensitivity, specificity and accuracy of model are higher than 90%. The results show that the proposed diagnostic method have advantages of low complexity and high diagnoses accuracy in the early diagnosis of breast cancer.

U.S. Ambassador Miguel H. Diaz, a Cuban-born theologian, told the audience that while balancing humanitarian and legal concerns is a challenge for modern states dealing with migration, "by finding ways to integrate migrants, communities can become stronger than before. The experience of migration can be an opportunity to embrace positively human diversity." The ambassador led a panel discussion, "Building Bridges of Opportunity: Migration and Diversity" March 8 at the Pontifical North American College; the discussion brought together Vatican officials, experts on migration, other ambassadors, students, priests, religious and people working with immigrants. Diaz opened the discussion by commenting on the biblical story of Abraham and Sarah welcoming three strangers, who turned out to be God's messengers. The story, he said, "suggests the challenges and opportunities that come with encountering strangers and the ethical responsibility to share life-sustaining resources." Archbishop Silvano Tomasi, the Vatican observer at U.N. agencies in Geneva and at the International Organization for Migration, told the conference, "The church sees migration as a resource for development, a positive phenomenon. "In the long experience of the church, migrants are a contribution (to society); they bring something positive, constructive, even though they take the dirty and difficult and dangerous jobs in society, they bring themselves, their tradition, their identity" to a new land.
